A Fermi Model of Quantum Black Hole

Abstract:We propose a quantum model of the Schwarzschild black hole as a quantum mechanics of a system of fermionic degrees of freedom. The system has a constant density of states and a Fermi energy that is inversely proportional to the size of the system. Assuming equivalence principle, we show that the degeneracy pressure of the Fermi degrees of freedom is able to withstand the collapse of gravity if the radius of the system is given precisely by the horizon radius of the Schwarzschild black hole. In our model, the fermionic degrees of freedom at each energy level can be entangled in certain different ways, giving rise to a multitude of degenerate ground states of the system. The counting of these microstates reproduces precisely the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. This simple Fermi model is universal and works also for the Reissner-Nordström charged black hole as well as black hole with a cosmological constant. From the properties of the Fermi variables, we propose that quantum gravity is characterized by a principle of {\it maximal capacity of states} where there can be no more than $V /l_P^3$ quantum states in any volume $V$. It implies a loss of spatial locality below the Planck length and suggests that any singularity predicted by general relativity is resolved and replaced by a quantum space in quantum gravity. In our model, a black hole spacetime is equipped with an uniform distribution of energy levels. This is another reason why black hole can be considered a simple harmonic oscillator of quantum gravity.

W-Infinite Symmetries in the Hierarchical Quasi-Particle States (lowest Landau-Level States) of the Fractional Quantum Hall Systems

Abstract:We investigate the W infinite symmetries in the theory of general fractional quantum Hall effects by using the lowest Landau level constraint approach. We find that there does exist a W infinite symmetric algebra for the fractional quantum Hall system with all the quasiparticles being restricted to the lowest Landau level. The corresponding generators can be used to generate the new degenerate wavefunctions of the lowest Landau level states by means of Laughlin and Halperin wavefunctions. Meanwhile, we find there still exists another W infinite symmetric algebra in the system, whose generators are used to generate the degenerate wavefunctions of the lowest Landau level for the anti-quasiparticles. We conclude that the FQH system can effectively be described by quasiparticle features or anti-quasiparticle features. We also show that the local part of the W infinite symmetric algebras is the magnetic translation operator of the general fractional quantum Hall system. We finally construct the operators of the single mode wave density excitations in the system and discuss their operator product relations.
Wannier Topology and Quadrupole Moments for a Generalized Benalcazar-Bernevig-Hughes Model

Abstract:We analyze a special separable and chiral-symmetric model with a quantized quadrupole moment, extending the Benalcazar-Bernevig-Hughes model [Science 357, 61 (2017)]. Using nested-Wilson loop formalism, we give an exact expression for Wannier centers, sector polarizations, and quadrupole moments. These are connected to the winding numbers of the constitutive one-dimensional chains. We prove that these winding numbers can characterize the model's Wannier topology as a $\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}$ set. These results clearly show that the quantization of the quadrupole moment can arise without additional spatial symmetry (except for translation symmetry) for the bulk. By switching from the Wannier representation to the Bloch representation, we derive an alternative expression for the bulk quadrupole moment and obtain its exact value. Combining the bulk quadrupole and edge polarizations, we analytically calculate the corner charge in a large square system and make the bulk-boundary correspondence explicit in an edge-consistent gauge. Our work reveals the relationship between zero-energy states at the boundary, charge localization, and the bulk quadrupole of the extended model.

Abstract:The quantum black hole model with a self-gravitating spherically symmetric thin dust shell as a source is considered. The shell Hamiltonian constraint is written and the corresponding Schroedinger equation is obtained. This equation appeared to be a finite differences equation. Its solutions are required to be analytic functions on the relevant Riemannian surface. The method of finding discrete spectra is suggested based on the analytic properties of the solutions. The large black hole approximation is considered and the discrete spectra for bound states of quantum black holes and wormholes are found. They depend on two quantum numbers and are, in fact, quasi-continuous. The quantum black hole bound state depends not only on mass but also on an additional quantum number, and black holes with the same mass have different quantum hairs. These hairs exhibit themselves at the Planckian distances near the black hole horizon. For the observer who can not measure the distances smaller than the Planckian length the black hole has the only parameter, its mass. The other, non-measurable, parameter leads to the quantum corrections to the black hole entropy. The quantum states with given mass are the mixed ones. It is shown that there exists the ground quantum black hole state with minimal mass equal approximately the Planckian mass. Its quantum state has zero entropy and it is a pure state. The existence of the quantum hairs may solve (at least partially) the well known information paradox in the black hole physics.
Quantum fermion superradiance and vacuum ambiguities on charged black holes

Abstract:Unlike a classical charged bosonic field, a classical charged fermion field on a static charged black hole does not exhibit superradiant scattering. We demonstrate that the quantum analogue of this classical process is however present. We construct a vacuum state for the fermion field which has no incoming particles from past null infinity, but which contains, at future null infinity, a nonthermal flux of particles. This state describes both the discharge and energy loss of the black hole, and we analyze how the interpretation of this phenomenon depends on the ambiguities inherent in defining the quantum vacuum.

Abstract:We apply our model of quantum gravity to an AdS black hole resulting in a wave equation in a quantum spacetime which has a sequence of solutions that can be expressed as a product of stationary and temporal eigenfunctions. The stationary eigenfunctions can be interpreted as radiation and the temporal as gravitational waves. The event horizon corresponds in the quantum model to a Cauchy hypersurface that can be crossed by causal curves in both directions such that the information paradox does not occur.

Abstract:$\mathbb{Z}_d$ Parafermions are exotic non-Abelian quasiparticles generalizing Majorana fermions, which correspond to the case $d=2$. In contrast to Majorana fermions, braiding of parafermions with $d>2$ allows to perform an entangling gate. This has spurred interest in parafermions and a variety of condensed matter systems have been proposed as potential hosts for them. In this work, we study the computational power of braiding parafermions more systematically. We make no assumptions on the underlying physical model but derive all our results from the algebraical relations that define parafermions. We find a familiy of $2d$ representations of the braid group that are compatible with these relations. The braiding operators derived this way reproduce those derived previously from physical grounds as special cases. We show that if a $d$-level qudit is encoded in the fusion space of four parafermions, braiding of these four parafermions allows to generate the entire single-qudit Clifford group (up to phases), for any $d$. If $d$ is odd, then we show that in fact the entire many-qudit Clifford group can be generated.

Abstract:We continue our work on the study of spherically symmetric loop quantum gravity coupled to two spherically symmetric scalar fields, with one that acts as a clock. As a consequence of the presence of the latter, we can define a true Hamiltonian for the theory. In previous papers, we studied the theory for large values of the radial coordinate, i.e., far away from any black hole or star that may be present. This makes the calculations considerably more tractable. We have shown that in the asymptotic region, the theory admits a large family of quantum vacua for quantum matter fields coupled to quantum gravity, as is expected from the well-known results of quantum field theory on classical curved space-time. Here, we study perturbative corrections involving terms that we neglected in our previous work. Using the time-dependent perturbation theory, we show that the states that represent different possible vacua are essentially stable. This ensures that one recovers from a totally quantized gravitational theory coupled to matter the standard behavior of a matter quantum field theory plus low probability transitions due to gravity between particles that differ at most by a small amount of energy.

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak g$ be a finite dimensional simple Lie algebra over $\mathbb C$, and let $\ell$ be a positive integer. In this paper, we construct the quantization $K_{\hat{\mathfrak g},\hbar}^\ell$ of the parafermion vertex algebra $K_{\hat{\mathfrak g}}^\ell$ as an $\hbar$-adic quantum vertex subalgebra inside the simple quantum affine vertex algebra $L_{\hat{\mathfrak g},\hbar}^\ell$. We show that $L_{\hat{\mathfrak g},\hbar}^\ell$ contains an $\hbar$-adic quantum vertex subalgebra isomorphic to the quantum lattice vertex algebra $V_{\sqrt\ell Q_L}^{\eta_\ell}$, where $Q_L$ is the lattice generated by the long roots of ${\mathfrak g}$. Moreover, we prove the double commutant property of $K_{\hat{\mathfrak g},\hbar}^\ell$ and $V_{\sqrt\ell Q_L}^{\eta_\ell}$ in $L_{\hat{\mathfrak g},\hbar}^\ell$.

Abstract:The operational framework for the superposition of spacetime is fundamentally important in developing a comprehensive description of quantum gravity (Foo et al. in Phys Rev Lett 129:181301, 2022). As a "bottom-up" unifying theory of quantum gravity, it allows us to investigate how mass superposition of spacetime influences the performance of quantum information processing. In this paper, we study how the quantum-gravitational effects produced by the mass superposition of a black hole influence the quantum coherence of fermionic fields. It is shown that the spacetime effects associated with a classical black hole lead to inevitable decoherence. Notably, compared to classical black hole spacetime scenarios, fermionic fields near a black hole with superposed masses can retain more quantum coherence. This suggests that the quantum properties of spacetime may serve as resources to mitigate coherent degradation caused by gravitational effects. The bottom-up perspective on spacetime superposition proposed in this work serves as an indication of quantum-gravitational effects and holds significant theoretical implications.

Abstract:The complex chiral boson model is proposed. We quantize the theory by using Dirac algorithm and discuss the BRST aspects of the complex chiral boson theory. It is also shown that at the quantum level the theory can be expressed in terms of a Weyl fermionic representation. This suggests that the chiral bosons and Weyl fermions in two dimensions be equivalent in their dual form.

We treat spatial and temporal coordinates on the same footing both at classical and quantum levels. Our quantization resolves or smears the singularities of the classical curvature invariants. Quantum trajectories with bounces can replace singular classical ones. The considered quantum black hole may have finite bouncing time. As a byproduct, we obtain the resolution of the gravitational singularity of the Schwarzschild black hole at quantum level.

Abstract:We study the canonical quantization of a massive scalar field on a five dimensional, rotating black hole space-time. We focus on the case where the space-time is asymptotically anti-de Sitter and the black hole's two angular momentum parameters are equal. In this situation the geometry possesses additional symmetries which simplify both the mode solutions of the scalar field equation and the stress-energy tensor. When the angular momentum of the black hole is sufficiently small that there is no speed-of-light surface, there exists a Killing vector which is time-like in the region exterior to the event horizon. In this case classical superradiance is absent and we construct analogues of the usual Boulware and Hartle-Hawking quantum states for the quantum scalar field. We compute the differences in expectation values of the square of the quantum scalar field operator and the stress-energy tensor operator between these two quantum states.

Abstract:During the past decades, theorists have been studying quantum mechanical systems that are believed to describe black holes. We review one of the simplest examples. It involves a collection of interacting oscillators and Majorana fermions. It is conjectured to describe a black hole in an emergent universe governed by Einstein equations. Based on previous numerical computations, we make an estimate of the necessary number of qubits necessary to see some black hole features.

Abstract:In Foldy-Wouthuysen representation, we deduce the effective quantum mechanics for a particle confined to a curved surface by using the thin-layer quantization scheme. We find that the spin effect caused by confined potential as the results of relativistic correction in the non-relativistic limit. Furthermore, the spin connection appeared in curved surface which depends on curvature contributes a Zeeman-like gap in the relativistic correction term. In addition, the confined potential also induces a curvature-independent energy shift, which is from the zitterbewegung effect. As an example, we apply the effective Hamiltonian to torus surface, in which we obtain expectantly the spin effects related to confined potential. Those results directly demonstrate the scaling of the uncommutation of the non-relativistic limit and the thin-layer quantization formalism.

Abstract:The quantization of a massive spin- 1/2 field that satisfies the Klein-Gordon equation is studied. The framework is consistent, provided it is formulated as a pseudo-Hermitian quantum field theory by the redefinition of the dual field and the identification of an operator that modifies the inner product of states in Hilbert space to preserve a real energy spectrum and unitary evolution.
