Abstract:A hierarchical multiscale modeling approach is used to investigate three-dimensional (3D) strain localization in granular media. Central to the multiscale approach is a hierarchical coupling of finite element method (FEM) and discrete element method (DEM), wherein the FEM is employed to treat a boundary value problem of a granular material and the required constitutive relation for FEM is derived directly from the DEM solution of a granular assembly embedded at each of the FEM Gauss integration points as the representative volume element (RVE). While being effective in reproducing the complex mechanical responses of granular media, the hierarchical approach helps to bypass the necessity of phenomenological constitutive models commonly needed by conventional FEM studies and meanwhile offers a viable way to link the macroscopic observations with their underlying microscopic mechanisms. To model the phenomenon of strain localization, key issues pertaining to the selection of proper RVE packings are first discussed. The multiscale approach is then applied to simulate the strain localization problem in a cubical specimen and a cylindrical specimen subjected to either conventional triaxial compression (CTC) or conventional triaxial extension (CTE) loading, which is further compared to a case under plane-strain biaxial compression (PBC) loading condition. Different failure patterns, including localized, bulging and diffuse failure modes, are observed and analyzed. Amongst all testing conditions, the PBC condition is found most favorable for the formation of localized failure. The CTC test on the cubical specimen leads to a 3D octopus-shaped localization zone, whereas the cylindrical specimen under CTC shows seemingly bulging failure from the outlook but rather more complex failure patterns within the specimen. The CTE test on a uniform specimen normally ends in a diffuse failure. Different micro mechanisms and controlling factors underlying the various interesting observations are examined and discussed.
Crater Depth Prediction in Granular Collisions: A Uniaxial Compression Model

Abstract:Impact crater experiments in granular media traditionally involve loosely packed sand targets. However, this study investigates granular impact craters on both loosely and more tightly packed sand targets. We report granular vs. granular experiments that consistently adhere to power-law scaling laws for diameter as a function of impacting energy, similar to those reported by other groups for their experiments utilizing both solid and granular projectiles. In contrast, we observe significant deviations in the depth vs. energy power-law predicted by previous models. To address this discrepancy, we introduce a physical model of uniaxial compression that explains how depth saturates in granular collisions. Furthermore, we present an energy balance alongside this model that aligns well with our crater volume measurements and describes the energy transfer mechanisms acting during crater formation. Central peak formation also plays an essential role in better transferring vertical momentum to horizontal degrees of freedom, resulting in shallow craters on compacted sandbox targets. Our results reveal a depth-to-diameter aspect ratio of approximately $\sim 1/5$, allowing us to interpret the shallowness of planetary craters in light of the uniaxial compression mechanism proposed in this work.

Abstract:Combining high-speed photography with laser profilometry, we study the dynamics and the morphology of liquid-drop impact cratering in wet granular media---a ubiquitous phenomenon relevant to many important geological, agricultural, and industrial processes. By systematically investigating important variables such as impact energy, the size of impinging drops and the degree of liquid saturation in granular beds, we uncover a novel scaling for the size of impact craters. We show that this scaling can be explained by considering the balance between the inertia of impinging drops and the strength of impacted surface. Such a theoretical understanding confirms that the unique energy partition originally proposed for liquid-drop impact cratering in dry granular media also applies for impact cratering in wet granular media. Moreover, we demonstrate that compressive stresses, instead of shear stresses, control granular impact cratering. Our study enriches the picture of generic granular impact cratering and sheds light on the familiar phenomena of raindrop impacts in granular media.

Abstract:We report the formation of a crater at the free surface of an immersed granular bed,locally crossed by an ascending gas flow. In two dimensions, the crater consists of two piles which develop around the location of the gas emission. We observe that the typical size of the crater increases logarithmically with time, independently of the gas emission dynamics. We describe the related granular flows and give an account of the influence of the experimental parameters, especially of the grain size and of the gas flow.

Abstract:Employing continuous medium three-dimensional reconstruction technology, this study explores the morphological evolution of crater surfaces during impact processes in the field of particle technology, investigating numerical variations and evolution rates in two dimensions. The results show that three-dimensional reconstruction effectively addresses dynamic surface measurement challenges with an accuracy error within the 0.2mm to 0.5mm range. The central depth, edge height, and diameter of the impact crater exhibit an initial increase with time, followed by a turning point within the same time range, eventually stabilizing. The distribution of crater morphology evolution rates aligns with the study of particle motion states at different times within the crater. Furthermore, a comparison with changes in particle velocity at specific locations reveals a consistent variation rate in the center depth of the impact crater with the trend of particle velocity changes. This suggests that the surface morphology of the impact crater can be determined by aggregating particle velocities radially, thereby constructing its overall features.

Abstract:From small seeds falling from trees to asteroids colliding with planets and moons, the impact of projectiles onto granular targets occurs in nature at different scales. In this paper, we investigate open questions in the mechanics of granular cratering, in particular the forces acting on the projectile, and the roles of granular packing, grain-grain friction and projectile spin. For that, we carried out DEM (discrete element method) computations of the impact of solid projectiles on a cohesionless granular medium, where we varied the projectile and grain properties (diameter, density, friction and packing fraction) for different available energies (within relatively small values). We found that a denser region forms below the projectile, pushing it back and causing its rebound by the end of its motion, and that solid friction affects considerably the crater morphology. Besides, we show that the penetration length increases with the initial spin of the projectile, and that differences in initial packing fractions can engender the diversity of scaling laws found in the literature. Finally, we propose an ad hoc scaling that collapsed our data for the penetration length and can perhaps unify existing correlations. Our results provide new insights into the formation of craters in granular matter.

Air jet impact craters on granular surfaces: a universal scaling

Abstract:Craters form as the lander's exhaust interacts with the planetary surfaces. Understanding this phenomenon is imperative to ensure safe landings. We investigate crater morphology, where a turbulent air jet impinges on the granular surfaces. To reveal the fundamental aspect of this phenomenon, systematic experiments are performed with various air jet velocities, nozzle positions, and grain properties. The resultant crater morphology is characterized by an aspect ratio. We find a universal scaling law in which the aspect ratio is scaled by the dimensionless variable consisting of air velocity at the nozzle, speed of sound in air, nozzle diameter, nozzle tip distance from the surface, grain diameter, the density of grains, and density of air. The obtained scaling reveals the crossover of the length scales governing crater aspect ratio, providing a useful guideline for ensuring safe landings. Moreover, we report a novel drop shaped subsurface cratering phenomenon.

Abstract:We report on the penetration of cylindrical projectiles dropped from rest into a dry, noncohesive granular medium. The cylinder length, diameter, density, and tip shape are all explicitly varied. For deep penetrations, as compared to the cylinder diameter, the data collapse onto a single scaling law that varies as the 1/3 power of the total drop distance, the 1/2 power of cylinder length, and the 1/6 power of cylinder diameter. For shallow penetrations, the projectile shape plays a crucial role with sharper objects penetrating deeper.

Abstract:The morphology scaling of a spherical projectile obliquely impacting into loose granular media is experimentally investigated. The influences of projectile’s releasing distance, diameter and oblique impact angle are mainly considered. Based on the experimental results, four scaling laws are eventually proposed to describe the variations of the length, width, depth of impact crater and the penetration depth of projectile after impacting. We find that when the impact angle is larger than a critical value, these quantities all exhibit power law dependences on the releasing distance, diameter and impact angle of projectile, which are analogous to that obtained in other similar vertical impacting experiments. It is also observed that once the oblique impact angle exceeds this critical value, the tadpole-shaped impact crater may commonly evolve into an elliptical one. At small impact angles, we find that the scaling laws on both the width and the depth of impact crater are still valid, although the corresponding fitting exponents have slightly deviated from those values at larger impact angles. However, the length of crater and the penetration depth of projectile seem to no longer yield such proposed scaling laws, possibly due to the different physical mechanism induced by the rebounding movements of projectile at small impact angles.

Abstract:By means of novel volume-diameter aspect ratio diagrams, we ponder on the current conception of crater morphogenesis analyzing crater data from beam explosions, hypervelocity collisions and drop experiments and comparing them with crater data from three moons (the Moon, Callisto, and Ganymede) and from our own experimental results. The distinctive volume-diameter scaling laws we discovered make us to conclude that simple and complex craters in satellites and planets could have been formed by granular vs. granular collisions and that central peaks and domes in complex craters were formed by a dynamic confinement of part of the impacting projectile, rather than by the uplift of the target terrain. A granulometric analysis of asteroids and central peaks and domes inside complex craters, shows boulder size distributions consistent with our hypothesis that crater internal features are the remnants of granular impactors.

Abstract:Explosive dispersal of granular media widely occurs in nature across various length scales, also enabling engineering applications ranging from commercial or military explosive systems to the loss prevention industry. However, the complex particle–flow coupling makes the explosive dispersal behaviour of particles difficult to control or even characterize. Here, we study the central explosion-driven dispersal of dense particle layers using the coarse-grained computational fluid dynamics–discrete element method and present a comprehensive investigation of both macroscale dispersal behaviours and particle-scale pattern formation. Employing three independent dimensionless parameters that characterize the efficiency, homogeneity and completeness of explosive dispersal, we categorize the dispersal behaviours into ideal, partial, retarded and failed modes, and propose the corresponding thresholds. As the mass ratio of granular materials to central pressurized gases (M/C) spans four orders of magnitude, the dispersal mode transitions from ideal to partial, then to retarded and finally to failed mode. The transitions of dispersal modes correspond to the particle–flow coupling regime crossovers, which change from decoupling to weak, medium and finally to strong coupling as the dispersal mode undergoes corresponding transitions. We proceed to develop continuum models accounting for the shock compaction and the ensuing pulsation of the particle ring that are capable of identifying the ideal dispersal mode from various dispersal systems. We also provide insights into the origins of diverse particle-scale patterns that are strongly correlated with macroscale dispersal modes and critical for the accurate prediction of dispersal modes.

Abstract:Extraterrestrial landing often requires firing a high-speed plume towards a planetary surface, and the resulting gas-granular interactions pose potential hazards to the lander. To investigate these jet-induced cratering dynamics, an experiment campaign covering a range of gas and granular properties relevant to the lunar and Martian environments was conducted in a large-scale vacuum chamber. Despite the variations in jet Mach number, mass flow rate, and composition of the granular phase investigated in this work, the observed time evolution of crater depth displays a consistent transition from an early-stage linear to a late-stage sublinear growth. To explain these scaling relations, a model that relates the kinetic energy gained by the particles per unit time to the power of the impinging jet is introduced. From this model, erosion rates and the critical depth at which the transition occurs can be extracted, and they are shown to depend on the gas impingement pressure, which was varied by changing ambient pressure, jet Mach number, mass flow rate, and nozzle height above the surface. These results highlight key mechanisms at work in the dynamics of plume-induced cratering and help to develop an understanding of optimal rocket engine firing times for future landings.

Abstract:Abstract Debris avalanches and dry granular flows exhibit similar characteristics. In order to comprehend the fundamental mechanisms and improve the accuracy in predicting disasters such as landslides, debris flows, and rock avalanches, the collapse characteristics of a binary granular column are investigated through a three‐dimensional discrete element model. A novel approach is proposed by incorporating the concept of local granular velocity fluctuation and applying a cluster analysis method. Then, the flow mechanism of the binary granular column is analyzed, by considering the inhomogeneous particle size distribution. The research results show that: (1) The normalized final packing height of the granular column gradually increases when the content of coarse particles exceeds 20% and when the coarse‐fine particle size ratio increases. Conversely, the normalized run‐out distance of the granular column decreases gradually with the increase in coarse particle content and the coarse‐fine particle size ratio. (2) The particles with higher granular velocity fluctuations tend to move together and form clusters, demonstrating dynamical heterogeneity. As the coarse particle content and coarse‐fine particle size ratio increase, there is a greater tendency for particles to assemble into larger‐scale active clusters. This means that a larger number of particles exhibit collective behavior during the collapse process, resulting in increased resistance to shear deformation. Ultimately, this leads to a greater packing height and a reduced run‐out distance when observed from a macroscopic perspective.

Abstract:Granular stream was created with Gaussian horizontal velocity distribution, and the granules pile up when falling on the ground. The ideal model predicts the pile should be Gaussian in shape but certain properties of granular matter can deform this ideal accumulation. After taking these factors into account, the pile surface evolution equation was acquired, and the theoretical prediction accorded with the experimental data very well. Finally, a new approach of mixing granular materials was proposed.
Centrifugal model testing study of explosion-induced craters and propagation of ground shock in clay

Abstract:Previous research results indicate that chemical blasting is a phenomenon induced by volumetric effect. 1/N 3(N for centrifuge acceleration) for blasting centrifuge model energy scaling can be confirmed according to the phenomenon. Centrifugal model tests on explosion-induced craters and propagation laws of ground shock in clay are investigated by using Tsinghua University's 50 g·t geotechnical centrifuge. Measured acceleration waveform are presented, and the recorded results are also analyzed. Some certain understandings about explosion-induced craters and ground shock propagation in clay are obtained. Coriolis acceleration has no obvious effect on the forming process of the crater; on the contrary, Coriolis acceleration has effect on the ejection of crater and its distribution. The volume of crater has distinct relationship with gravity acceleration, small-scale modeling must increase gravity acceleration. The results prove that the geotechnical centrifuge is a good apparatus for blasting.
Scaling and dynamics of sphere and disk impact into granular media

Abstract:Direct measurements of the acceleration of spheres and disks impacting granular media reveal simple power law scalings along with complex dynamics which bear the signatures of both fluid and solid behavior. The penetration depth scales linearly with impact velocity while the collision duration is constant for sufficiently large impact velocity. Both quantities exhibit power law dependence on sphere diameter and density, and gravitational acceleration. The acceleration during impact is characterized by two jumps: a rapid, velocity dependent increase upon initial contact and a similarly sharp, depth dependent decrease as the impacting object comes to rest. Examining the measured forces on the sphere in the vicinity of these features leads to a new experimentally based granular force model for collision. We discuss our findings in the context of recently proposed phenomenological models that capture qualitative dynamical features of impact but fail both quantitatively and in their inability to capture significant acceleration fluctuations that occur during penetration and which depend on the impacted material.

Abstract:When a jet of gas impinges vertically on a granular bed and forms a crater, the grains may be moved by several different mechanisms: viscous erosion, diffused gas eruption, bearing capacity failure, and/or diffusion-driven shearing. The relative importance of these mechanisms depends upon the flow regime of the gas, the mechanical state of the granular material, and other physical parameters. Here we report research in two specific regimes: viscous erosion forming scour holes as a function of particle size and gravity; and bearing capacity failure forming deep transient craters as a function of soil compaction.

Abstract:<p>The distribution characteristics of the explosion wave field of a cylindrical charge were investigated in this paper via a high-speed schlieren experiment. Based on the fractal theory, the paper studies the crack propagation characteristics of the media under the action of the cylindrical charge explosion impact at different initiation points. The results show that the velocity of detonation appeared attenuation region when the detonation wave changes to the shock wave, and a certain angle of detonation wave ranging from 58<sup>0</sup>to 62°. Based on the schlieren experiment and the theoretical model, the included angle between the explosion wave in the vicinity of the detonation point and the blasthole wall surface is about 90°, during a stable explosion, the ultimate included angle between the explosion wave and the blasthole wall surface is about 60°. Based on the analysis of the propagation characteristics of the explosion cracks of the cylindrical charge, the angle of incident makes the initiation and propagation of the cracks around the blasthole deflect and the angle of deflection coincides with the theoretical calculation value. The pulverization zone formed in the vicinity of the detonation point is larger than in other zones, but the crack zone is smaller than in other zones. Moreover, the cracking range produced by the cylindrical charge is roughly the range of its five-fold blasthole diameter. There were significant fractal characteristics, within the range of one-to two-fold blasthole diameter, the medium is completely pulverized and forms a zone of dense cracks; within the range of three-to four-fold blasthole diameter, the medium is severely damaged and a crack transition zone forms; five-fold blasthole diameter, there are a few explosion cracks in the medium and a zone of sparse cracks forms.</p>
