Abstract:We investigate the potential to measure the electro-weak couplings of scalar leptoquarks $\Phi_s$ at TESLA for energies in the range of $\sqrt{s} \simeq 1 \TeV$ using the pair production process $e^+e^- \to \Phi_s \bar{\Phi}_s$.

Abstract:Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are probably powered by high-angular momentum black hole-torus systems in suspended accretion. The torus will radiate gravitational waves as non-axisymmetric instabilities develop. The luminosity in gravitational-wave emissions is expected to compare favorably with the observed isotropic equivalent luminosity in GRB-afterglow emissions. This predicts that long GRBs are potentially the most powerful LIGO/VIRGO burst-sources in the Universe. Their frequency-dynamics is characterized by a horizontal branch in the $\dot{f}(f)-$diagram.

Abstract:We study scalar leptoquark production at TESLA and CLIC based e-gamma colliders. Both direct and resolved contributions to the cross section are examined. We find that the masses of scalar leptoquarks can be probed up to about 0.9 TeV at TESLA and 2.6 TeV at CLIC.

Abstract:At a future linear collider, the masses and couplings of scalar leptons can be measured with high accuracy, thus requiring precise theoretical predictions for the relevant processes. In this work, after a discussion of the expected experimental precision, the complete one-loop corrections to smuon and selectron pair production in the MSSM are presented and the effect of different contributions in the result is analyzed.

Abstract:A search for beyond the standard model spin-0 bosons, $\phi$, that decay into pairs of electrons, muons, or tau leptons is presented. The search targets the associated production of such bosons with a W or Z gauge boson, or a top quark-antiquark pair, and uses events with three or four charged leptons, including hadronically decaying tau leptons. The proton-proton collision data set used in the analysis was collected at the LHC from 2016 to 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The observations are consistent with the predictions from standard model processes. Upper limits are placed on the product of cross sections and branching fractions of such new particles over the mass range of 15 to 350 GeV with scalar, pseudoscalar, or Higgs-boson-like couplings, as well as on the product of coupling parameters and branching fractions. Several model-dependent exclusion limits are also presented. For a Higgs-boson-like $\phi$ model, limits are set on the mixing angle of the Higgs boson with the $\phi$ boson. For the associated production of a $\phi$ boson with a top quark-antiquark pair, limits are set on the coupling to top quarks. Finally, limits are set for the first time on a fermiophilic dilaton-like model with scalar couplings and a fermiophilic axion-like model with pseudoscalar couplings.

Abstract:The Future Circular Collider (FCC) -- in its first incarnation as a lepton collider -- will produce, according to the proposed design, more than 100 billion pairs of $\tau$ leptons after working for four years at the energy of the $Z$-boson resonance. The $\tau$ lepton is special because its relatively long lifetime makes it possible to reconstruct the momenta of neutrinos emitted in the single pion decay mode. The resulting large number of events is an ideal source for a full quantum tomography of the process that will test quantum entanglement and the violation of Bell inequality with unprecedented precision. In addition, the study of polarizations and spin correlations can provide a competitive determination of the Weinberg angle $ \theta_W$ and constrain possible anomalous couplings in the neutral electroweak current. We utilize analytic results and Monte Carlo simulations to explore to what extent these goals might be accomplished.

Abstract:Event shape distributions in $e^+e^-$ annihilation are determined from the DELPHI data taken between 183 and 207\gev. From these the strong coupling $\alpha_s$ is extracted with several techniques. Together with the results from other LEP2 energies and at about $m_Z$ this allows both, a combined measurement of $\alpha_s$ and a test of the scale dependence of the strong interaction. Alternatively the renormalisation group invariant (RGI) perturbation theory is applied to measure the $\beta$ function of strong interaction. The results are good agreement with the QCD expectation and allow to exclude the existence of light gluinos with a mass below 30\gev in a model independent way.

Abstract:The top quark flavor changing neutral current processes are extremely suppressed within the Standard Model. Nevertheless, they could be enhanced in a new physics model beyond the Standard Model. Investigating the top quark's flavor changing neutral current interactions at colliders would be an important test in terms of new physics. In this work, we examine the potentials of the processes ${e^{-}} {p} {\rightarrow} {e^{-}} {\gamma}^{*} {p} {\rightarrow} {e^{-}} W^{+} b {\gamma}^{*}{\rightarrow} {e^{-}} {j} {\bar{j}} b {\gamma}^{*} $ and ${e^{-}} {p} {\rightarrow} {e^{-}} {\gamma}^{*} {p} {\rightarrow} {e^{-}} W^{+} b {\gamma}^{*}{\rightarrow} {e^{-}} \textit{l} {\nu}_\textit{l} b {\gamma}^{*} $ at the FCC-eh with $\sqrt{s} = 7.08 $ and $ 10.0 TeV $ to study anomalous $tq\gamma$ couplings via effective Lagrangians. We obtain $95{\%}$ confidence level sensitivities on the anomalous coupling parameters at the three FCC-eh energies and various integrated luminosities. We find that our limits are at least two orders of magnitude better than the current LHC experimental results.

Abstract:We study a renormalizable theory that includes a heavy weak-singlet vectorlike lepton, $\tau^\prime$, that decays into a pseudoscalar boson and a tau lepton. We show that this can be the dominant decay mode of $\tau^\prime$ provided the pseudoscalar couplings deviate from the case of a Nambu-Goldstone boson. For a range of parameters, the pseudoscalar is long-lived, and mainly decays into a photon pair at one loop, or into a tau pair at tree level. Electroweak production of $\tau^{\prime +} \tau^{\prime -}$ leads to a rich phenomenology at colliders, including signals with many taus or photons. We analyze in detail the LHC signal involving two prompt taus and two displaced photon pairs. Particularly interesting is the case where the pseudoscalar has a decay length of a few meters and thus would typically deposit energy in the muon chambers of the CMS or ATLAS detectors.

Measurements of polarization and spin correlation and observation of entanglement in top quark pairs using lepton+jets events from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Abstract:Measurements of the polarization and spin correlation in top quark pairs ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$) are presented using events with a single electron or muon and jets in the final state. The measurements are based on proton-proton collision data from the LHC at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. All coefficients of the polarization vectors and the spin correlation matrix are extracted simultaneously by performing a binned likelihood fit to the data. The measurement is performed inclusively and in bins of additional observables, such as the mass of the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ system and the top quark scattering angle in the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ rest frame. The measured polarization and spin correlation are in agreement with the standard model. From the measured spin correlation, conclusions on the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ spin entanglement are drawn by applying the Peres-Horodecki criterion. The standard model predicts entangled spins for $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ states at the production threshold and at high masses of the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ system. Entanglement is observed for the first time in events at high $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ mass, where a large fraction of the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ decays are space-like separated, with an expected and observed significance of above 5 standard deviations.

Probing Lepton Flavor Violation at Circular Electron-Positron Colliders

Abstract:Lepton flavor violation is one of the cleanest probes of physics beyond the standard model. In this work, we explore the sensitivity of the process $e^+ e^- \to \tau \mu$ to new physics above the TeV scale at the proposed circular electron-positron colliders FCC-ee and CEPC. We compute the $e^+ e^- \to \tau \mu$ cross-section in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory and assess the relevant backgrounds. We compare our sensitivity projections to existing and expected constraints from tau decays and $Z$ decays and find that the future electron-positron colliders provide competitive probes of new physics. We highlight the complementarity of searches for resonant $e^+ e^- \to Z \to \tau \mu$ production on the $Z$ pole and searches for non-resonant $e^+ e^- \to \tau \mu$ at higher center-of-mass energies.

Top quark effective couplings from top-pair tagged photoproduction in $\boldsymbol{pe^-}$ collisions

Abstract:We summarize the quantitative results of our analysis [1] of top-pair photoproduction in semileptonic mode in $pe$ collisions at the LHeC and FCC-he. We define three photoproduction regions, based on the rapidity acceptance range of the electron tagger, that provide different degrees of sensitivity to top-quark effective couplings. We focus on the $t\bar{t}\gamma$ dipole couplings and the left-handed vector $tbW$ coupling, for which we determine limits at both energies in the different photoproduction regions. We find that the LHeC and FCC-he will yield tight direct bounds on top dipole moments, greatly improving on current direct limits from hadron colliders, and direct limits on the $tbW$ coupling as restrictive as those expected from the HL-LHC. We also consider indirect limits from $b\to s \gamma$ branching ratio and $CP$ asymmetry, that are well known to be very sensitive probes of top electromagnetic dipole moments.

Abstract:A dark leptophilic scalar $(\phi_L)$ is a hypothetical particle that couples only to leptons rather than quarks. We report on a search for $\phi_L$ in the $e^+e^- \to \tau^+ \tau^- \phi_L, ~\phi_L \to \ell^+ \ell^- ~(\ell = e, \mu)$ process using 626~\invfb of data collected by the Belle experiment near the \Y4S resonance. We validate the backgrounds with multiple control regions in data, using a novel multiclass multivariate event classifier. In absence of a signal, we quote upper limits at the 90\% confidence level on the coupling between $\phi_L$ and leptons. Our bounds, obtained in a blinded approach, are 19\% more constraining than the previous limits, averaged over the mass range $0.04 \leq m_{\phi_L} \leq 6.5~\gev$. We exclude the parameter space below 4~\gev favored by measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon.

Abstract:We evaluate the implications of LHC and LEP/SLC measurements for the electro-weak couplings of the top and bottom quarks. We derive global bounds on the Wilson coefficients of ten two-fermion operators in an effective field theory description. The combination of hadron collider data with Z -pole measurements is found to yield tight limits on the operator coefficients that modify the left-handed couplings of the bottom and top quark to the Z boson. We also present projections for the high-luminosity phase of the LHC and for future electron-positron colliders. The bounds on the operator coefficients are expected to improve substantially during the remaining LHC programme, by factors of 1 to 5 if systematic uncertainties are scaled as statistical ones. The operation of an e + e − collider at a center-of-mass energy above the top-quark pair production threshold is expected to further improve the bounds by one to two orders of magnitude. The combination of measurements in pp and e + e − collisions allows for a percent-level determination of the top-quark Yukawa coupling, that is robust in a global fit.

Abstract:We report on the feasibility of measuring the top Yukawa coupling in the process: $e^+e^-\to t\bar{t}H$. This measurement is crucial to test the mass generation mechanism for matter particles. Since the cross section for this process attains its maximum around $\sqrt{s}=700 $GeV, most of the past studies were done assuming this energy region. It has been pointed out, however, that the QCD threshold correction enhances the cross section significantly and might enable its measurement at $\sqrt{s}=500 $GeV, which will be accessible already in the first phase of the ILC project. We have implemented this threshold enhancement into our $t\bar{t}H$ event generator and carried out Monte Carlo simulations. Our results show that $t\bar{t}H$ events can be observed with a significance of $4.1\,\sigma$ with no beam polarization and $5.4 \sigma$ with the $e^-$ and $e^+$ beam polarization combination: $(-0.8,+0.3)$.

Measurements of top-quark pair spin correlations in the $eμ$ channel at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV using $pp$ collisions in the ATLAS detector

Abstract:A measurement of observables sensitive to spin correlations in $t\bar{t}$ production is presented, using 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Differential cross-sections are measured in events with exactly one electron and one muon with opposite-sign electric charge as a function of the azimuthal opening angle and the absolute difference in pseudorapidity between the electron and muon candidates in the laboratory frame. The azimuthal opening angle is also measured as a function of the invariant mass of the $t\bar{t}$ system. The measured differential cross-sections are compared to predictions by several NLO Monte Carlo generators and fixed-order calculations. The observed degree of spin correlation is somewhat higher than predicted by the generators used. The data are consistent with the prediction of one of the fixed-order calculations at NLO, but agree less well with higher-order predictions. Using these leptonic observables, a search is performed for pair production of supersymmetric top squarks decaying into Standard Model top quarks and light neutralinos. Top squark masses between 170 and 230 GeV are largely excluded at the 95% confidence level for kinematically allowed values of the neutralino mass.

Measurement of multijet azimuthal correlations and determination of the strong coupling in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 Te V

Abstract:A measurement is presented of a ratio observable that provides a measure of the azimuthal correlations among jets with large transverse momentum p T . This observable is measured in multijet events over the range of p T = 360 - 3170 Ge V based on data collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 Te V , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 134 fb - 1 . The results are compared with predictions from Monte Carlo parton-shower event generator simulations, as well as with fixed-order perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) predictions at next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy obtained with different parton distribution functions (PDFs) and corrected for nonperturbative and electroweak effects. Data and theory agree within uncertainties. From the comparison of the measured observable with the pQCD prediction obtained with the NNPDF3.1 NLO PDFs, the strong coupling at the Z boson mass scale is α S ( m Z ) = 0.1177 ± 0.0013 (exp) - 0.0073 + 0.0116 (theo) = 0 . 1177 - 0.0074 + 0.0117 , where the total uncertainty is dominated by the scale dependence of the fixed-order predictions. A test of the running of α S in the Te V region shows no deviation from the expected NLO pQCD behaviour.
Differential cross-section measurements of the production of four charged leptons in association with two jets using the ATLAS detector

Abstract:Differential cross-sections are measured for the production of four charged leptons in association with two jets. These measurements are sensitive to final states in which the jets are produced via the strong interaction as well as to the purely-electroweak vector boson scattering process. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by ATLAS at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV and with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb$^{-1}$. The data are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution and are compared to state-of-the-art Monte Carlo event generator predictions. The differential cross-sections are used to search for anomalous weak-boson self-interactions that are induced by dimension-six and dimension-eight operators in Standard Model effective field theory.

Higgs self-coupling measurements at the FCC-hh

Abstract:The hadron collider phase of the Future Circular Collider (FCC-hh) is a proton-proton collider operating at a center-of-mass energy of 100 TeV. It is one of the most ambitious projects planned for the rest of this century and offers ample opportunities in the hunt for new physics, both through its direct detection reach as well as through indirect evidence from precision measurements. Extracting a precision measurement of the Higgs self-coupling from the Higgs pair production cross-section will play a key role in our understanding of electroweak symmetry breaking, as the self-coupling gives insight into the nature of the Higgs potential. With the large data set of in total 30 $\text{ab}^{-1}$ which is envisioned to be collected during the FCC-hh runtime the Higgs self-coupling will be determined down to the percent level. This paper presents prospect studies for Higgs self-coupling measurements in the $b\bar{b}\gamma\gamma$ and $b\bar{b}\ell\ell + E_{\text{T}}^{\text{miss}}$ final states, with the combined, expected precision on the Higgs self-coupling modifier $\kappa_{\lambda}$ reaching 3.2-5.7% at 68% confidence level, assuming all other Higgs couplings follow their Standard Model expectations and depending on the systematic uncertainties assumed. This high precision is mostly driven by the $b\bar{b}\gamma\gamma$ final state analysis, while the $b\bar{b}\ell\ell + E_{\text{T}}^{\text{miss}}$ final state - newly studied for its FCC-hh prospects in this document - on its own reaches a maximum precision of roughly 20% on $\kappa_{\lambda}$.
