Abstract:The formula for the electric field of a point charge moving with constant velocity is derived using the symmetry properties of Maxwell's equations - its Lorentz invariance. In contrast to conventional treatments, the derivation presented does not use retarded integrals or relativity transformations.

Abstract:Thin V2O3 films were deposited on a piezoelectric substrate by electron-beam evaporation. Surface acoustic waves (SAW) were generated by interdigital-transducers (IDTs). The attenuation and sound velocity was investigated from 260K to 10K, providing an insight into the temperature dependent electrical, dielectrical and elastic properties of V2O3 at the metal to insulator transition.

Abstract:We find the electric field of a point charge in `truncated hyperbolic motion', in which the charge moves at a constant velocity followed by motion with a constant acceleration in its instantaneous rest frame. The same Lienard-Wiechert formula holds for the acceleration phase and the constant velocity phase of the charge's motion. The only modification is that the formula giving the retarded time is different for the two motions, and the acceleration is zero for the constant velocity motion. The electric field lines are continuous as the retarded time increases through the transition time between constant velocity and accelerated motion. As the transition time approaches negative infinity the electric field develops a delta function contribution that has been introduced by others as necessary to preserve Gauss's law for the electric field.

Abstract:Maxwell's four differential equations describing electromagnetism are among the most famous equations in science. Feynman said that they provide four of the seven fundamental laws of classical physics. In this paper, we derive Maxwell's equations using a well-established approach for deriving time-dependent differential equations from static laws. The derivation uses the standard Heaviside notation. It assumes conservation of charge and that Coulomb's law of electrostatics and Ampere's law of magnetostatics are both correct as a function of time when they are limited to describing a local system. It is analogous to deriving the differential equation of motion for sound, assuming conservation of mass, Newton's second law of motion and that Hooke's static law of elasticity holds for a system in local equilibrium. This work demonstrates that it is the conservation of charge that couples time-varying E -fields and B -fields and that Faraday's Law can be derived without any relativistic assumptions about Lorentz invariance. Abstract:Electromagnetic fields of relativistic charged particles have a broad frequency spectrum and a sophisticated spatial structure. Field lines offer a visual representation of this spatial structure. In this article, we derive a general set of equations for the field lines of any moving charged particle. The electric field lines are completely determined by the unit vector from the retarding point to the observation point. After proper transformations, the field line equations describe the rotation of this vector with an angular velocity coinciding with Thomas precession. In some cases, including all planar trajectories, the field line equations reduce to linear differential equations with constant coefficients. We present a detailed derivation of these equations and their general analytical solution. We then illustrate this method by constructing field lines for the “figure eight” motion of an electric charge moving under the influence of a plane wave, including complex field lines in three dimensions.

Abstract:Generation of electromagnetic fields by moving charges is a fascinating topic where the tight connection between classical electrodynamics and special relativity becomes particularly apparent. One can gain direct insight into the fascinating structure of such fields by visualizing the electric field lines. However, the calculation of electric field lines for arbitrarily moving charges is far from trivial. Here, we derive an equation for the direction that points from the retarded position of a moving charge towards a specific field line position, which allows for a simple construction of these lines. We analytically solve this equation for several special but important cases: for an arbitrary rectilinear motion, for the motion within the wiggler magnetic field of a free electron laser, and for the motion in a synchrotron.

Abstract:The volume charge density for a conducting ellipsoid is expressed in simple geometrical terms, and then used to obtain the known surface charge density as well as the uniform charge per length along any principal axis. Corresponding results are presented for conducting hyperellipsoids in any number of spatial dimensions.

Abstract:As an integrative and insightful example for undergraduates learning about electrostatics, we discuss how to use symmetry, Coulomb's law, superposition, Gauss's law, and visualization to understand the electric field E(x,y,z) produced by a uniformly charged cubic shell. We first discuss how to deduce qualitatively, using freshman-level physics, the perhaps surprising fact that the interior electric field is nonzero and has a complex structure, pointing inwards from the middle of each face of the shell and pointing outwards towards each edge and corner. We then discuss how to understand the quantitative features of the electric field by plotting an analytical expression for E along symmetry lines and on symmetry surfaces of the shell.

Direct derivation of Lienard Wiechert potentials, Maxwell's equations and Lorentz force from Coulomb's law

Abstract:In 19th century Maxwell derived Maxwell equations from the knowledge of three experimental physical laws: the Coulomb's law, the Ampere's force law and Faraday's law of induction. However, theoretical basis for Ampere's force law and Faraday's law remains unknown to this day. Furthermore, the Lorentz force is considered as experimental phenomena, the theoretical foundation of this force is still unknown. To answer these fundamental theoretical questions, we derive Lienard Wiechert potentials, Maxwell's equations and Lorentz force from two simple postulates: (a) when all charges are at rest the Coulomb's force acts between the charges, and (b) that disturbances caused by charge in motion propagate away from the source with finite velocity. The special relativity was not used in our derivations nor the Lorentz transformation. In effect, it was shown all the electrodynamic laws, including the Lorentz force, can be derived from Coulomb's law and time retardation. This was accomplished by analysis of hypothetical experiment where test charge is at rest and where previously moving source charge stops at some time in the past. Then the generalized Helmholtz decomposition theorem, also derived in this paper, was applied to reformulate Coulomb's force acting at present time as the function of positions of source charge at previous time when the source charge was moving. From this reformulation of Coulomb's law the Lienard Wiechert potentials and Maxwell's equations were derived. In the second part of this paper, the energy conservation principle valid for moving charges is derived from the knowledge of electrostatic energy conservation principle valid for stationary charges. This again was accomplished by using generalized Helmholtz decomposition theorem. From this dynamic energy conservation principle the Lorentz force is derived.

Abstract:The problem of the two-dimensional motion of a charged particle with constant mass in the presence of a uniform constant perpendicular magnetic field features in several undergraduate and graduate quantum physics textbooks. This problem is very important to studies of two-dimensional materials that manifest quantum Hall behavior, as evidenced by several major discoveries over the last few years. Many real experimental samples are more complicated due to the anisotropic mass of the electrons. In this work, we provide the exact solution to this problem by means of a clever scaling of coordinates. Calculations are done for a symmetric gauge of the magnetic field. This study allows a broad audience of students and teachers to understand the mathematical techniques that lead to the solution of this quantum problem.

Duality Symmetric Electrodynamics in Curved Spacetime

Abstract:We derive Maxwell equations for electric and magnetic fields in curved spacetime from first principles, relaxing an unnecessary assumption on the structure of the four-potential inherent to the standard approach and thus restoring the full consistency with the equivalence principle in the following two important cases: first, if the electromagnetic field is considered as a physical entity separate from the charged particles used to measure it, and second, if hypothetical magnetically charged particles are allowed to exist. We find that in a generic curved spacetime, the electromagnetic field has to be described by two pairs of electric and magnetic fields, instead of the only one pair which is enough in the flat spacetime case.

Abstract:A connection between Maxwell's equations, Newton's laws, and the special theory of relativity is established with a derivation that begins with Newton's verbal enunciation of his first two laws. Derived equations are required to be covariant, and a simplicity criterion requires that the four-vector force on a charged particle be linearly related to the four-vector velocity. The connecting tensor has derivable symmetry properties and contains the electric and magnetic field vectors. The Lorentz force law emerges, and Maxwell's equations for free space emerge with the assumption that the tensor and its dual must both satisfy first order partial differential equations. The inhomogeneous extension yields a charge density and a current density as being the source of the field, and yields the law of conservation of charge. Newton's third law is reinterpreted as a reciprocity statement, which requires that the charge in the source term can be taken as the same physical entity as that of the test particle and that both can be assigned the same units. Requiring covariance under either spatial inversions or time reversals precludes magnetic charge being a source of electromagnetic fields that exert forces on electric charges.

Abstract:By solving three-dimensional vectorial equations which are independent of coordinate system,the relativistic motion of a charged particle in a uniform electric field is discussed.The trajectory,velocity and acceleration of the particle are obtained in the form of vectorial formula.Furthermore,dynamic graphing is realized by using the Mathematica 6 computing software,which allows a detailed comparison with the results under the non-relativistic limit.

Abstract:We present a theoretical approach to study the dynamics of spherical, cylindrical and ellipsoidal charge distributions under their self-Coulomb field and a stochastic force due to collisions and random motions of charged particles. The approach is based on finding the current density of the charge distribution from the charge-current continuity equation and determining the drift velocities of the particles. The latter can be used either to derive the Lagrangian of the system, or to write Newton's equation of motion with the Lorentz force. We develop a kinetic theory to include the stochastic force due to random motions of electrons in our model. To demonstrate the efficacy of our method, we apply it to various charge distributions and compare our results to N-body simulations. We show that our method reproduces the well-known emittance term in the envelope equation of uniform spherical and cylindrical charge distributions with correct coefficients. We use our model for the gravitational collapse of an ideal gas as well as the cyclotron dynamics of a cylindrical charge distribution in a uniform magnetic field and propose a method to measure the emittance of electron beams.

Abstract:The wave function $\psi$ is interpreted as charge density, or charge distribution, at each point in space. This is a physical interpretation of $\psi$. The notion of speed can be associated with $\psi$, which leads to the concept of conduction currents and (displacement) convection currents. The charge distribution is the origin of electrical and mechanical sources, potentials and fields. The notion of self potential is essential for defining electrical or mechanical sources. Maxwell's equations are derived from the condition of charge conservation and mass conservation. There are two methods of modelling the mass of a charge: The mass of a charge is its electrostatic energy. The mass of a charge is the energy of the Zero Point Field (ZPF) that interacts with the point charge. It is shown that the two models are related by a simple energy equation for a particle at rest.

Abstract:A semi‐analytic solution for scattering from a semi‐elliptical cavity with arbitrary orientation placed in a perfect electric conductor (PEC) plane is suggested. By imposing the boundary conditions at an elliptical border, three independent equations containing the Mathieu functions series are extracted. A semi‐analytic solution for scattering from a semi‐elliptical cavity with arbitrary orientation placed in a perfect electric conductor plane is suggested. By imposing the boundary conditions at an elliptical border, three independent equations containing the Mathieu functions series are extracted. Finally, the solution of the problem is reduced to the solution of a simple system of linear equations by using Mathieu function addition theorem and the orthogonal properties of the angular Mathieu functions. Some examples are presented to demonstrate the reliability and the accuracy of the proposed solution.

Abstract:Uniform charged spherical sphere generated by the electric field in the sphere inside and outside electric field strength distribution is very simple, but it is difficult to obtain the spherical surface of the electric field strength with Gauss’s law . This article introduced the integral calculation and deductive analytic two methods, using field strength’s principle of superposition to calculate the electric field strength value of the charged spherical surface, to obtain a complete electric field strength distribution of the uniformly charged spherical generated electric field . According to the investigation, the present study is the first example.
Images of point charges in conducting ellipses and prolate spheroids

Abstract:This is an investigation into the exact forms of images of point charges in 2D conducting ellipses and 3D prolate spheroids. For an ellipse with exterior point source, we compare two previous expressions for the analytic continuation inside the ellipse down to the focal line, the location of the image charge. For an interior source, we discover a sequence of image charges lying outside. For a point source close the surface of a spheroid, series solutions for the potential diverge in a region that encompasses the singularities of the continuation of the reflected potential inside the spheroid. We uncover an image system for a point charge on the axis of a prolate spheroid that extends from the focal segment somewhat further up the axis. For an off axis charge we find a new approximate image charge. For a point charge at the center of the spheroid, the image singularity is found to lie on an infinitely wide, flat sheet with a hole around the spheroid. For a point charge located anywhere inside the spheroid, we find two new approximate image charge solutions, a point charge in real space which applies when source lies near the surface, or a point charge in complex space which projects as a ring in the real space which applies when the source lies near the rotation axis. When the point charge lies exactly on a focal point, a multipole of order 1/2 is an ideal image approximation.

Abstract:Li'enard-Wiechert potentials have been derived for a moving and 'classically' spinning point-charge; assuming it to be a small rigid charged-sphere in combined non-relativistic translational and rotational motion, and subsequently reducing its dimensions to 'point-particle' limit. The paper demonstrates that when the effect of rotation were taken into account, together with causality, expressions for the LW potentials accompany additional correction terms that contain spin-angular-momentum (or simply the 'classical-spin') of the point-charge.

In this chapter, we introduce Gauss’s law as an alternative method for calculating electric fields of certain highly symmetrical charge distribution systems. In addition to being simpler than Coulomb’s law, Gauss’s law permits us to use qualitative reasoning.

Abstract:An electromagnetic field of simple algebraic structure is simply derived. It turns out to be the G=0 limit of the charged rotating Kerr-Newman metrics. These all have gyromagnetic ratio 2, the same as the Dirac electron. The charge and current distributions giving this high gyromagnetic ratio have charges of both signs rotating at close to the velocity of light. It is conjectured that something similar may occur in the quantum electrodynamic charge distribution surrounding the point electron.
