Abstract:In this article we examine the hypothesis that the highest energy cosmic rays are complex nuclei from extragalactic sources. Under reasonable physical assumptions, we show that the nearby metally rich starburst galaxies (M82 and NGC 253) can produce all the events observed above the ankle. This requires diffusion of particles below $10^{20}$ eV in extragalactic magnetic fields $B \approx 15$ nG. Above $10^{19}$ eV, the model predicts the presence of significant fluxes of medium mass and heavy nuclei with small rate of change of composition. Notwithstanding, the most salient feature of the starburst-hypothesis is a slight anisotropy induced by iron debris just before the spectrum-cutoff.

Abstract:Physics beyond the standard model might imply the cosmological production of particles with grand unification scale energies. Nucleons and gamma-rays from such processes are candidates for the cosmic rays observed beyond 100 EeV [10**(20) eV]. Using a new particle propagation code, we calculate the neutrino fluxes predicted by such scenarios if consistency with the observed cosmic ray flux and the universal gamma-ray background at 1-10 GeV is required. Flux levels detectable by proposed km**3 scale neutrino observatories are allowed by these constraints. Bounds on or detection of a neutrino flux above about 1 EeV would allow neutrino astronomy to probe grand unification scale physics.

On the Galactic origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays

Abstract:It is shown that the acceleration of particles by a powerful relativistic jet associated with the activity of a supermassive black hole in the Galactic center several million years ago may explain the observed cosmic ray spectrum at energies higher than $10^{15}$ eV. The accelerated particles are efficiently confined in the extended magnetized gas halo created by the supernova and central black hole activity just after the Galaxy formation. We found that both the heavy and light chemical composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays can be consistent with observations.

The Dark Dimension and the Grand Unification of Forces

Abstract:The dark dimension scenario, predicting one extra mesoscopic dimension in the micron range, has emerged by applying various Swampland principles to the dark energy. In this note we find that realizing the grand unification of gauge forces is highly constraining in this context. Without actually constructing any GUT models, we argue that the mere assumption of grand unification of forces in this scenario, together with the experimental bounds on massive replicas of the Standard Model gauge bosons, predicts an upper bound for the GUT scale, $M_{GUT}\lesssim 10^{16}\ {\rm GeV}$. Combined with the experimental bound on the proton lifetime, this predicts that the $X$ gauge boson mediating proton decay is a 5d solitonic string of Planckian tension stretched across a length scale $L\sim ({\rm 1-10\ TeV})^{-1}$ ending on gauge branes of the same diameter $\sim L$. This leads to a mass of $M_X\sim 10^{15}-10^{16}\ {\rm GeV}$. In particular assuming grand unification in the dark dimension scenario results in a tower of Kaluza-Klein excitations of Standard Model gauge bosons on the gauge branes in the 1-10 TeV range. This suggests that the diameter/separation $L$ of the gauge branes correlates with both the weak scale $\sim 1/L$ near a TeV {\it and} the GUT scale $\sim M_5^2 L$ at $10^{16}\ {\rm GeV}$.

Abstract:Our Universe is described jointly by Einstein's relativity principle and thequantum principle; there the existence of the smallest units of matter, such aselectrons, neutrinos, quarks, and photons, is well established and the smallestunits of matter are described by the Standard Model. Based on these, we have aclear picture for the propagation of ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECR's),for energies greater than E > 10^13 eV but less than E < 10^26 eV,in the cosmic medium of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and of the cosmicbackground neutrinos (CBν's). We find that the CMB plays a pivot role inthis energy range, so that the observed "knee(s)" and the "ankle" could beunderstood in reasonable terms. What we might observe at the energy near10^25 eV', the so-called "W^± bursts" or "Z^0 bursts", is brieflydiscussed. Meanwhile, in the early Universe, the CBν's, in view of the tinyneutrino mass, gave rise to the clustering phenomenon, resulting in a neutrinohalo attached to each visual ordinary-matter object, such as the Earth, theSun, and stars - with the PeV neutrinos near the surface of the Fermi-Diracsphere of the neutrino halo of the Earth playing the most fundamental role.
A Hierarchical Framework for explaining the Cosmic Ray Spectrum using Diffusive Shock Acceleration

Abstract:The hypothesis that the entire cosmic ray spectrum, from $\lesssim1\,{\rm GeV}$ to $\gtrsim100\,{\rm EeV}$ energy, can be accounted for by diffusive shock acceleration on increasingly large scales is critically examined. Specifically, it is conjectured that Galactic cosmic rays, up to $\sim3\,{\rm PeV}$, are mostly produced by local supernova remnants, from which they escape upstream. These cosmic rays initiate a powerful magnetocentrifugal wind, removing disk mass and angular momentum before passing through the Galactic Wind Termination Shock at a radius $\sim200\,{\rm kpc}$, where they can be re-accelerated to account for observed cosmic rays up to $\sim30\,{\rm PeV}$. The cosmic rays transmitted downstream from more powerful termination shocks associated with other galaxies can be further accelerated at Intergalactic Accretion Shocks to the highest energies observed. In this interpretation, the highest rigidity observed particles are protons; the highest energy particles are heavy nuclei, such as iron. A universal "bootstrap" prescription, coupling the energy density of the magnetic turbulence to that of the resonant cosmic rays, is proposed, initially for the highest energy particles escaping far ahead of the shock front and then scattering, successively, lower energy particles downstream. Observable implications of this general scheme relate to the spectrum, composition and sky distribution of Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays, the extragalactic radio background, the Galactic halo magnetic field and Pevatrons.

Abstract:We argue that if ultrahigh-energy (E > 10^10 GeV) cosmic rays are heavy nuclei (as indicated by existing data), then the pointing of cosmic rays to their nearest extragalactic sources is expected for 10^10.6 < E/GeV < 10^11. This is because for a nucleus of charge Ze and baryon number A, the bending of the cosmic ray decreases as Z/E with rising energy, so that pointing to nearby sources becomes possible at highest energies. In addition, the maximum energy of acceleration capability of the sources grows linearly in Z, while the energy loss per distance traveled decreases with increasing A. Each of these two points tend to favor heavy nuclei at the highest energies. The traditional bi-dimensional analyses, which simultaneously reproduce Auger data on the spectrum and nuclear composition, may not be capable of incorporating the relative importance of these phenomena. In this paper we propose a multi-dimensional reconstruction of the individual emission spectra (in E, direction, and cross-correlation with nearby putative sources) to study the hypothesis that primaries are heavy nuclei subject to GZK photo-disintegration, and to determine the nature of the extragalactic sources. More specifically, we propose to combine information on nuclear composition and arrival direction to associate a potential clustering of events with a 3-dimensional position in the sky. Actually, both the source distance and maximum emission energy can be obtained through a multi-parameter likelihood analysis to accommodate the observed nuclear composition of each individual event in the cluster. We show that nucleus-emitting-sources exhibit a cepa stratis structure on Earth which could be pealed off by future space-missions, such as POEMMA. We also show that metal-rich starburst galaxies are highly-plausible candidate sources, and we use them as an explicit example of our proposed multi-dimensional analysis.

Abstract:Decaying topological defects, in particular cosmic strings, can produce a significant flux of high energy neutrinos, photons and cosmic rays. According to the prevailing understanding of cosmic string dynamics in an expanding Universe, the network of long strings loses its energy first into string loops, which in turn give off most of their energy as gravitational radiation. However, it has been suggested by Vincent et al. (VHS) that particle emission may be the dominant energy loss channel for the long string network. In this case, the predicted flux of high energy particles would be much larger. Here we calculate the predicted flux of high energy gamma rays, neutrinos and cosmic ray antiprotons and protons as a function of the scale of symmetry breaking at which the strings are produced and as a function of the initial energy m_J of the particle jets which result from the string decay. Assuming the validity of the VHS scenario, we find that due to the interactions with the cosmic radiation backgrounds all fluxes but the neutrino flux are suppressed at the highest energies. This indicates that the observed events above the GZK cutoff can only be accounted for in this scenario if the primary particle is a neutrino and the scale of the symmetry breaking is somewhat less than the GUT scale. The domain of parameter space corresponding to GUT-scale symmetry breaking is excluded also by the current observations below the GZK cutoff. A new aspect of this work is the calculation of the spectrum of the tau neutrinos directly produced in the decay of the X-particles. This significantly increases the tau neutrino signal at high energies in all cosmic string scenarios.

From known to unknown: cosmic rays transition from the Sun, the Galaxy, and the Extra-Galaxy

Abstract:The Sun stands out as the closest and clearest astrophysical accelerator of cosmic rays, while other objects within and beyond the galaxy remain enigmatic. It is probable that the cosmic ray spectrum and mass components from these celestial sources share similarities, offering a novel approach to study their origin. In this study, we analyze of spectra and mass in the energy range from MeV to 10~EeV. We find: (1) the mean-logarithmic mass $\rm\left\langle lnA \right\rangle$ distribution with energy exhibits much clearer feature structures than the spectra; (2) a 100~TeV bump is presented in the $\rm\left\langle lnA \right\rangle$ distribution; (3) for protons, the knee is located at $\sim2$ PeV, the boundary between the galaxy and extra-galaxy occurs at $\sim30$ PeV, marked by a sharp dip; (4) the all-particle spectrum exhibits hardening at $\sim30$~PeV due to the contribution of nearby galaxies, and the extra-galactic dominate $\sim0.7$~EeV. We hope the LHAASO experiment can perform spectral measurements of individual species to validate our results.

Abstract:The diffuse γ-ray spectrum at sub-PeV energy region has been measured for the first time by the Tibet-ASγ experiment. It will shed new light on the understanding of the origin and propagation of Galactic cosmic rays at very high energies. It has been pointed out that the traditional cosmic ray propagation model based on low energy measurements undershoot the new data, and modifications of the model with new ingredients or alternative propagation framework is required. In this work, we propose that the hadronic interactions between freshly accelerated cosmic rays and the medium surrounding the sources, which was neglected in the traditional model, can naturally account for the Tibet-ASγ diffuse emission. We show that this scenario gives a consistent description of other secondary species such as the positron spectrum, the boron-to-carbon ratio, and the antiproton-to-proton ratio. As a result, the electron spectrum above 10 TeV will have a hardening due to this secondary component, which may be tested by future measurements.

Unstable superheavy relic particles as a source of neutrinos responsible for the ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays

Abstract:Decays of superheavy relic particles may produce extremely energetic neutrinos. Their annihilations on the relic neutrinos can be the origin of the cosmic rays with energies beyond the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff. The red shift acts as a cosmological filter selecting the sources at some particular value z_e, for which the present neutrino energy is close to the Z pole of the annihilation cross section. We predict no directional correlation of the ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays with the galactic halo. At the same time, there can be some directional correlations in the data, reflecting the distribution of matter at red shift z=z_e. Both of these features are manifest in the existing data. Our scenario is consistent with the neutrino mass reported by Super-Kamiokande and requires no lepton asymmetry or clustering of the background neutrinos.

Abstract:Cosmic rays are the highest energy particles found in nature. Measurements of the mass composition of cosmic rays between 10^{17} eV and 10^{18} eV are essential to understand whether this energy range is dominated by Galactic or extragalactic sources. It has also been proposed that the astrophysical neutrino signal comes from accelerators capable of producing cosmic rays of these energies. Cosmic rays initiate cascades of secondary particles (air showers) in the atmosphere and their masses are inferred from measurements of the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum, Xmax, or the composition of shower particles reaching the ground. Current measurements suffer from either low precision, or a low duty cycle and a high energy threshold. Radio detection of cosmic rays is a rapidly developing technique, suitable for determination of Xmax with a duty cycle of in principle nearly 100%. The radiation is generated by the separation of relativistic charged particles in the geomagnetic field and a negative charge excess in the shower front. Here we report radio measurements of Xmax with a mean precision of 16 g/cm^2 between 10^{17}-10^{17.5} eV. Because of the high resolution in $Xmax we can determine the mass spectrum and find a mixed composition, containing a light mass fraction of ~80%. Unless the extragalactic component becomes significant already below 10^{17.5} eV, our measurements indicate an additional Galactic component dominating at this energy range.

On the origin of the spectral features observed in the cosmic ray spectrum

Abstract:Recent measurements revealed the presence of several features in the cosmic ray spectrum. In particular, the proton and helium spectra exhibit a spectral hardening at $\approx$ 300 GV and a spectral steeping at $\approx$ 15 TV, followed by the well known knee-likefeature at $\approx$ 3 TV. The spectra of heavier nuclei also harden at $\approx$ 300 GV, while no claim can be currently done about the presence of the $\approx$ 15 TV softening, due to low statistics. In addition, the B/C ratio flattens at $\approx$ 1 TeV/n. We present a novel scenario for cosmic ray sources and transport in the Galaxy that may explain all of the observed spectral features. The proposed scenario is based mainly on two assumptions. First, in the Galactic disk, where magnetic field lines are mainly oriented along the Galactic plane, particle scattering is assumed to be very inefficient. Therefore, the transport of cosmic rays from the disk to the halo is set by the magnetic field line random walk induced by large scale turbulence. Second, we propose that the spectral steepening at $\approx$ 15 TV is related to the typical maximum rigidity reached in the acceleration of cosmic rays by the majority of supernova remnants, while we assume that only a fraction of sources, contributing to $\approx$ 10-20% of the cosmic ray population, can accelerate particles up to $\sim$ PV. We show that, within this framework, it is possible to reproduce the proton and helium spectra from GV to multi-PV, and the p/He ratio, the spectra of cosmic ray from lithium to iron, the $\bar{p}$ flux and the $\bar{p}$/p ratio and the abundance ratios B/C, B/O, C/O, Be/C, Be/O, Be/B. We also discuss the $^{10}$Be/ $ ^9$Be ratio in view of the recent AMS02 preliminary measurements.

Extragalactic TeV Photons and the Zero-point Vibration Spectrum Limit

Abstract:There are observations indicating a possible anomalous transparency of intergalactic space (filled with infrared background light) for extragalactic gamma-rays of very high energy (> 100 GeV). The anomaly is usually associated with effects of some new physics. However, another explanation is possible -- as a manifestation relating to a cut-off of the zero-point vibration spectrum. It is assumed that this boundary U_{ZV} is isotropic in the reference frame, where the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation is isotropic, and an estimate is obtained: U_{ZV} ~7.4 TeV. The presence of a ZV boundary also leads to an increased beta decay time of accelerated particles with the Lorentz factor > 50. It is widely believed that the ZV-spectrum continues up to the Planck energy. There is, however, a 5D variant of the Absolute Parallelism theory (AP), free from singularities of solutions, where a large characteristic length L appears, which determines the thickness of expanding spherical S^3-shell (the cosmological solution as the longitudinal wave along the radius) in co-moving co-ordinates. Newton's Law 1/r^2 is replaced by 1/r at distances exceeding L, and the Planck length (a composite parameter) `arises' from L when switching to the conventional energy-momentum scale. The theory features are briefly exposed -- description of 15 polarizations (degrees of freedom), the energy-momentum tensor (in prolonged 4th order equations), topological charges and quasi-charges of localized field configurations.

Abstract:We study the phenomenology of a UX(1) extension of the Standard Model where the SM particles are not charged under the new abelian group. The Green-Schwarz mechanism insures that the model is anomaly free. The erstwhile invisible dark gauge field X, even if produced with difficulty at the LHC has however a clear signature in gamma-ray telescopes. We investigate what BSM scale (which can be interpreted as a low-energy string scale) would be reachable by the FERMI/GLAST telescope after 5 years of running and show that a 2 TeV scale can be testable, which is highly competitive with the LHC.

Abstract:Observed events of ultra-high energy cosmic rays may indicate a hard component for the energy spectrum of their flux, which might have origin in the decay of long-lived vortons presumably condensed in the galactic halo. To be consistent with the needed present density, vortons may have been formed during the breaking of an abelian symmetry contained in a large GUT group like E6 and a part of them could have survived the destabilization caused by the electroweak transition.

Abstract:We investigate the propagation of ultraheavy (UH) nuclei as ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). We show that their energy loss lengths at $\lesssim300$~EeV are significantly longer than those of protons and intermediate-mass nuclei, and that the highest-energy cosmic rays with energies beyond $\sim100$ EeV, including the Amaterasu particle, may originate from such UH-UHECRs. We derive constraints on the contribution of UH-UHECR sources, and find that they are consistent with energy generation rate densities of UHECRs from collapsars and neutron star mergers.

Abstract:Aims. The flux of ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) at E > 1018.5 eV is believed to arise in plasma shock environments in extragalactic sources. In this paper, we present a systematic study of cosmic ray (CR) particle acceleration by relativistic shocks, in particular concerning the dependence on bulk Lorentz factor and the angle between the magnetic field and the shock flow. The contribution to the observed diffuse CR spectrum provided by the accelerated particles is discussed. Methods. For the first time, Monte Carlo simulations for super- and subluminal shocks are extended to boost factors up to Γ = 1000 and systematically compared. The source spectra derived are translated into the expected diffuse proton flux from astrophysical sources by folding the spectra with the spatial distribution of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and gamma ray bursts (GRBs). Results of these predictions are compared with UHECR data. Results. While superluminal shocks are shown to be inefficient at providing acceleration to the highest energies (E > 1018.5 eV), subluminal shocks may provide particles up to 1021 eV, limited only by the Hillas-criterion. In the subluminal case, we find that mildly-relativistic shocks, thought to occur in jets of AGN (Γ ~ 10-30), yield energy spectra of dN/dE ~ E-2. Highly relativistic shocks expected in GRBs (100 < Γ < 1000), on the other hand, produce spectra as flat as ~ E-1.0 above 109.5 GeV. The model results are compared with the measured flux of CRs at the highest energies and it is shown that, while AGN spectra provide an excellent fit, GRB spectra are too flat to explain the observed flux. The first evidence of a correlation between the CR flux above 5.7 1010 GeV and the distribution of AGN provided by Auger are explained by our model. Although GRBs are excluded as the principle origin of UHECRs, neutrino production is expected in these sources either in mildly or highly relativistic shocks. In particular, superluminal shocks in GRBs may be observable via neutrino and photon fluxes, rather than as protons.

Abstract:We study the phenomenology of a $U_X(1)$ extension of the Standard Model where the SM particles are not charged under the new abelian group. The Green-Schwarz mechanism insures that the model is anomaly free. The erstwhile invisible dark gauge field $X$, even if produced with difficulty at the LHC has however a clear signature in gamma-ray telescopes. We investigate what BSM scale (which can be interpreted as a low-energy string scale) would be reachable by the FERMI/GLAST telescope after 5 years of running and show that a 1 TeV scale can be testable, which is highly competitive with the LHC.
