K-theory of C^*-algebras from one-dimensional generalized solenoids

Abstract:We compute the K-groups of C^*-algebras arising from one-dimensional generalized solenoids. The results show that Ruelle algebras from one-dimensional generalized solenoids are one-dimensional generalizations of Cuntz-Krieger algebras.

Coalescing at 8 GeV in the Fermilab Main Injector

Abstract:For Project X, it is planned to inject a beam of 3 10**11 particles per bunch into the Main Injector. To prepare for this by studying the effects of higher intensity bunches in the Main Injector it is necessary to perform coalescing at 8 GeV. The results of a series of experiments and simulations of 8 GeV coalescing are presented. To increase the coalescing efficiency adiabatic reduction of the 53 MHz RF is required, resulting in ~70% coalescing efficiency of 5 initial bunches. Data using wall current monitors has been taken to compare previous work and new simulations for 53 MHz RF reduction, bunch rotations and coalescing, good agreement between experiment and simulation was found. Possible schemes to increase the coalescing efficiency and generate even higher intensity bunches are discussed. These require improving the timing resolution of the low level RF and/or tuning the adiabatic voltage reduction of the 53 MHz.

Abstract:064<p type="texpara" tag="Body Text" et="abstract" bin="clone" >There are two schools, or lines of thought, that try to unify the apparently divergent laws of dynamics and thermodynamics and to explain the observed time-asymmetry of the universe, and most of its sub-systems, in spite of the fact that these systems are driven by time-symmetric evolution equations. They will be called the coarse-graining and the fine-graining schools (even if these names describe only a part of their philosophy). Coarse-graining school obtains time-asymmetry via a projection of the state space on a space of ''relevant'' states. The corresponding projection of the primitive reversible evolution laws yields effective irreversible evolution laws for the relevant states. Fine-graining always use the same primitive reversible evolution laws. But these laws (in adequate extensions of the usual spaces where these laws are formulated) have a set of solutions $S$ that can be decompose in two subsets $S_{+\text{}}$ and $S_{-}$ of time asymmetric solutions. Choosing one of these two sets, as the arena to formulate the theory, time asymmetry is established. Superstructures For High Current Fel Application

Abstract:The next generations of FELs at TJNAF will produce coherent light at power levels of 10 kW and 100 kW, respectively [1]. To achieve these power levels, 200 MeV electron beams of 10 mA and 100 mA have to be accelerated in the linear accelerators of the devices. The accelerators will be based on superconducting technology. Stable operation of these machines is only possible if the cavity Higher Order Modes (HOM) excited by the beams can sufficiently be damped. One of the possible accelerating structures which can fulfill this requirement, is a superstructure (SST) made of two weakly coupled subunits and equipped with appropriate HOM couplers. Based on the positive experience at DESY with 1.3 GHz superstructures, we are investigating for possible use similar structures in the linacs for the FEL upgrades. We have built a copper model of the proposed superstructure, based on two copper models of the 5-cell CEBAF cavities. This contribution presents measured results on this model. We are now in the process of fabrication a Nb prototype and hope to perform its cold test by the end of this year.
Ultimate bunch length and emittance performance of an MeV ultrafast electron diffraction apparatus with a DC gun and a multi-cavity SRF linac

Abstract:We present the design of a high repetition rate MeV energy ultrafast electron diffraction instrument based on a DC photoelectron gun and an SRF linac with multiple independently controlled accelerating and bunching cavities. The design is based on the existing Cornell photoinjector, which can readily be applied to the presented findings. Using particle tracking simulations in conjunction with multiobjective genetic algorithm optimization, we explore the smallest bunch lengths, emittance, and probe spot sizes achievable. We present results for both stroboscopic conditions (with single electrons per pulse) and with $10^5$ electrons/bunch which may be suitable for single-shot diffraction images. In the stroboscopic case, the flexibility provided by the many-cavity bunching and acceleration allows for longitudinal phase space linearization without a higher harmonic field, providing sub-fs bunch lengths at the sample. Given low emittance photoemission conditions, these small bunch lengths can be maintained with probe transverse sizes at the single micron scale and below. In the case of $10^5$ electrons per pulse, we simulate state-of the art 5D brightness conditions: rms bunch lengths of 10 fs with 3 nm normalized emittances, while now permitting repetition rates as high as 1.3 GHz. Finally, to aid in the design of new SRF-based UED machines, we simulate the trade-off between the number of cavities used and achievable bunch length and emittance.

Compensating slice emittance growth in high brightness photoinjectors using sacrificial charge

Abstract:Achieving maximum electron beam brightness in photoinjectors requires detailed control of the 3D bunch shape and precise tuning of the beam focusing. Even in state-of-the-art designs, slice emittance growth due to nonlinear space charge forces and partial nonlaminarity often remains non-negligible. In this work we introduce a new means to linearize the transverse slice phase space: a sacrificial portion of the bunch's own charge distribution, formed into a wavebroken shock front by highly nonlinear space charge forces within the gun, whose downstream purpose is to dynamically linearize the desired bunch core. We show that linearization of an appropriately prepared bunch can be achieved via strongly nonlaminar focusing of the sacrificial shock front, while the inner core focuses laminarly. This leads to a natural spatial separation of the two distributions: a dense core surrounded by a diffuse halo of sacrificial charge that can be collimated. Multi-objective genetic algorithm optimizations of the ultra-compact x-ray free electron laser (UCXFEL) injector employ this concept, and we interpret it with an analytic model that agrees well with the simulations. In simulation we demonstrate a final bunch charge of 100 pC, peak current $\sim 30$ A, and a sacrificial charge of 150 pC (250 pC total emitted from cathode) with normalized emittance growth of $<20$ nm-rad due to space charge. This implies a maximum achievable brightness approximately an order of magnitude greater than existing FEL injector designs.

A Compact X-Band Linac for an X-Ray FEL

Abstract:With the growing demand for FEL light sources, cost issues are being reevaluated. To make the machines more compact, higher frequency room temperature linacs are being considered, specifically ones using C-band (5.7 GHz) rf technology, for which 40 MV/m gradients are achievable. In this paper, we show that an X-band (11.4 GHz) linac using the technology developed for NLC/GLC can provide an even lower cost solution. In particular, stable operation is possible at gradients of 100 MV/m for single bunch operation and 70 MV/m for multibunch operation. The concern, of course, is whether the stronger wakefields will lead to unacceptable emittance dilution. However, we show that the small emittances produced in a 250 MeV, low bunch charge, LCLS-like S-band injector and bunch compressor can be preserved in a multi-GeV X-band linac with reasonable alignment tolerances. The successful lasing and operation of the LCLS [1] has generated world-wide interest in X-ray FELs. The demand for access to such a light source by researchers eager to harness the capabilities of this new tool far exceeds the numbers that can be accommodated, spurring plans for additional facilities. Along with cost, spatial considerations become increasingly important for a hard X-ray machine driven by amore » multi-GeV linac. The consequent need for high acceleration gradient focuses attention on higher frequency normal conducting accelerator technology, rather than the superconducting technology of a soft X-ray facility like FLASH. C-band technology, such as used by Spring-8, is a popular option, capable of providing 40 MV/m. However, more than a decade of R&D toward an X-band linear collider, centered at SLAC and KEK, has demonstrated that this frequency option can extend the gradient reach to the 70-100 MV/m range. The following design and beam dynamics calculations show an X-band linac to be an attractive choice on which to base an X-ray FEL.« less
Parameters for a 30 GeV Undulator Test Facility in the FFTB/LCLS

Abstract:The parameters for a 30 GeV test beam are outlined for use with an undulator in the FFTB tunnel where the LCLS will eventually be housed. It is proposed to use the SLAC linac and damping rings in their present mode of operation for PEP II injection, where 30 GeV beams are also delivered at 10 Hz to the FFTB. High peak currents are obtained with the addition of a second bunch compressor in the linac. In order to minimize the synchrotron radiation induced emittance growth in the bunch compressor it is necessary to locate the new bunch compressor at the low-energy end of the linac, just after the damping rings. The bunch compressor is a duplicate of the LCLS chicane-style bunch compressor. This test beam would provide an exciting possibility to test LCLS undulator sections and provide a unique high-brightness source of incoherent X-rays and begin developing the LCLS experimental station. The facility will also act as a much needed accelerator test bed for the production, diagnostics and tuning of very short bunches in preparation for the LCLS after the photo injector is commissioned.

Suppressing Coherent Synchrotron Radiation Effects in Chicane Bunch Compressors

Abstract:The most significant advances in the accelerator-based light sources (i.e., x-ray free electron lasers) are driven by the production of the high final peak current in the last several decades. As a prerequisite to attain the proposed high brightness, the symmetric C-chicane bunch compressor is typically exploited due to its simplicity, efficiency, and natural dispersion-free feature at all orders. However, during bunch compression for a high peak current requirement, a main contributing factor to the transverse emittance degradation is the emission of the coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR). Suppressing this effect is necessary to preserve the beam phase-space quality. To this end, this paper presents an analysis of one-dimensional CSR point-kick and derives the cancellation conditions in terms of compression factor. The CSR cancelation conditions indicate an asymmetric geometric design. We demonstrate concrete schemes for asymmetric C- and S-chicanes, and verify the CSR cancelation conditions using integration methods and ELEGANT simulations. Furthermore, the proposed asymmetric C- and S-chicanes can drastically suppress the emittance growth compared with the symmetric ones with identical bunch compression goals.

Abstract:Active longitudinal beam optics can help FEL facilities achieve cutting edge performance by optimizing the beam to: produce multi-color pulses, suppress caustics, or support attosecond lasing. As the next generation of superconducting accelerators comes online, there is a need to find new elements which can both operate at high beam power and which offer multiplexing capabilities at Mhz repetition rate. Laser heater shaping promises to satisfy both criteria by imparting a programmable slice-energy spread on a shot-by-shot basis. We use a simple kinetic analysis to show how control of the slice energy spread translates into control of the bunch current profile, and then we present a collection of start-to-end simulations at LCLS-II in order to illustrate the technique.

Abstract:At the Advanced Superconducting Test Accelerator (ASTA) now under construction at Fermilab, we anticipate the appearance of the microbunching instability related to the longitudinal space charge (LSC) impedances. With a photoinjector source and up to two chicane compressors planned, the conditions should result in the shift of some microbunched features into the visible light regime. The presence of longitudinal microstructures (microbunching) in the electron beam or the leading edge spikes can result in strong, spatially localized coherent enhancements of optical transition radiation (COTR) that mask the actual beam profile. Several efforts on mitigation of the effects in the diagnostics task have been identified. At ASTA we have designed the beam profiling stations to have mitigation features based on spectral filtering, scintillator choice, and the timing of the trigger to the digital camera's CCD chip. Since the COTR is more intense in the NIR than UV we have selectable bandpass filters centered at 420 nm which also overlap the spectral emissions of the LYSO:Ce scintillators. By delaying the CCD trigger timing of the integration window by 40-50 ns, we can reject the prompt OTR signal and integrate on the delayed scintillator light predominately. This combination of options should allow mitigation of COTR enhancements of order 100-1000 in the distribution.
The design of high-brightness ERL-FEL injector based on VHF electron gun

Abstract:In the past decade, the fourth-generation light source based on the combination of Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) and Free-Electron Laser (FEL) using superconducting linear accelerators has garnered significant attention. It holds immense potential, particularly in generating high-power Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) light sources. This article primarily focuses on the physical design of an injector for ERL-FEL, based on a Very High Frequency (VHF) electron gun with a charge of 100 pC. The beam energy is accelerated to 10 MeV using 3-cell superconducting cavity. The optimization of beam parameters is conducted through employment of BMad and ASTRA simulations, incorporating the concept of Merger optimization. The beam emittance is less than 0.6 mm mrad, and the peak current at the injector exit exceeds 18 A. We present a new method to evaluate the Longitudinal Space Charge (LSC) effects in merger sections, which can be readily applied in design work. Furthermore, we introduce a novel type of merger. The performance of this new merger is comparable to the previously known optimum, the zigzag merger, offering a potential alternative solution for injectors in ERLs.

Experimental Demonstration of Energy Chirp Compensation by a Tunable Dielectric Based Structure

Abstract:A 60 MeV beam at the BNL Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) was manipulated by a planar tunable de-chirper made out of two 10 cm long dielectric slabs with copper plated backs. While the gap was changed from 5.8 mm to 1 mm, the correlated energy chirp of the low charge electron bunch was reduced from approximately 330 keV/mm to zero. This result is in agreement with simulations. Calculations show that similar devices, properly scaled to account for the expected electron bunch charge and length, can be used to remove residual correlated energy spread at the end of the linacs used for free-electron lasers (FEL). Potentially, this technique could significantly simplify linac design and improve FEL performance.

Microbunch preserving in-line system for an APPLE II helical radiator at the LCLS baseline

Abstract:In a previous work we proposed a scheme for polarization control at the LCLS baseline, which exploited the microbunching from the planar undulator. After the baseline undulator, the electron beam is transported through a drift by a FODO focusing system, and through a short helical radiator. The microbunching structure can be preserved, and intense coherent radiation is emitted in the helical undulator at fundamental harmonic. The driving idea of this proposal is that the background linearly-polarized radiation from the baseline undulator is suppressed by spatial filtering. Filtering is achieved by letting radiation and electron beam through Be slits upstream of the helical radiator, where the radiation spot size is about ten times larger than the electron beam transverse size. Several changes considered in the present paper were made to improve the previous design. Slits are now placed immediately behind the helical radiator. The advantage is that the electron beam can be spoiled by the slits, and narrower slits width can be used for spatial filtering. Due to this fundamental reason, the present setup is shorter than the previous one. The helical radiator is now placed immediately behind the SHAB undulator. It is thus sufficient to use the existing FODO focusing system of the SHAB undulator for transporting the modulated electron beam. This paper presents complete GENESIS code calculations for the new design, starting from the baseline undulator entrance up to the helical radiator exit including the modulated electron beam transport by the SHAB FODO focusing system.
Flexible multi-bunch-length operation for continuous-wave x-ray free-electron lasers

Abstract:The X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) are cutting-edge instruments pivotal in a broad range of fields, providing high-power X-ray pulses with durations spanning from femtoseconds to attoseconds. One of the critical challenges in XFEL facilities is the simultaneous accommodation of diverse requirements for XFEL operation modes and photon properties across different undulator lines. This paper proposes a dipole-kicker combination in the bunch compressors to vary the electron bunch length for the continuous-wave XFEL facilities driven by a superconducting linac. This method enables optimization of the electron bunch length on a per-bunch basis, tailored to each specific needs of each undulator. Through start-to-end simulations based on the parameters of the Shanghai high-repetition-rate XFEL and extreme light facility, we demonstrate the feasibility of this technique. The results show its effectiveness in enabling simultaneous operations of self-amplified spontaneous emission and externally seeded FEL across different undulator lines, ensuring optimal electron bunch compression for each undulator line.

Ultra-Bright Electron Bunch Injection in a Plasma Wakefield Driven by a Superluminal Flying Focus Electron Beam

Abstract:We propose a new method for self-injection of high-quality electron bunches in the plasma wakefield structure in the blowout regime utilizing a "flying focus" produced by a drive beam with an energy chirp. In a flying focus the speed of the density centroid of the drive bunch can be superluminal or subluminal by utilizing the chromatic dependence of the focusing optics. We first derive the focal velocity and the characteristic length of the focal spot in terms of the focal length and an energy chirp. We then demonstrate using multidimensional particle-in-cell simulations that a wake driven by a superluminally propagating flying focus of an electron beam can generate GeV-level electron bunches with ultralow normalized slice emittance (similar to 30 nm rad), high current (similar to 17 kA), low slice energy spread (similar to 0.1%), and therefore high normalized brightness (> 10(19) A/m(2) /rad(2)) in a plasma of density similar to 10(19) cm(-3). The injection process is highly controllable and tunable by changing the focal velocity and shaping the drive beam current. Near-term experiments at FACET II where the capabilities to generate tens of kA, < 10 fs drivers are planned, could potentially produce beams with brightness near 10(20) A/m(2)/rad(2).
A Passive Linearizer for Bunch Compression

Abstract:In high gain free electron laser (FEL) facility design and operation, a high bunch current is required to get lasing with a reasonable gain length. Because of the current limitation of the electron source due to the space charge effect, a compression system is used to compress the electron beam to the exact current needed. Before the bunch compression, the nonlinear energy spread due to the finite bunch length should be compensated; otherwise the longitudinal profile of bunch will be badly distorted. Usually an X band accelerating structure is used to compensate the nonlinear energy spread while decelerating the beam. But for UV FEL facility, the X band system is too expensive comparing to other system. In this paper, we present a corrugated structure as a passive linearizer, and the preliminary study of the beam dynamics is also shown.
Steady-State Micro-Bunching based on Transverse-Longitudinal Coupling

Abstract:In this paper, three specific scenarios of a novel accelerator light source mechanism called steady-state micro-bunching (SSMB) have been studied, i.e., longitudinal weak focusing, longitudinal strong focusing and generalized longitudinal strong focusing (GLSF). Presently, GLSF is the most promising among them in realizing high-power short-wavelength coherent radiation with a mild requirement on the modulation laser power. Its essence is to exploit the ultrasmall natural vertical emittance in a planar electron storage ring for efficient microbunching formation, like a partial transverse-longitudinal emittance exchange at the optical laser wavelength range. By invoking such a scheme, the laser modulator of an SSMB storage ring can work in a continuous wave or high duty cycle mode, thus allowing a high filling factor of microbunched electron beam in the storage ring and high average output radiation power. The backbone of it is the precision transverse-longitudinal phase space coupling dynamics, which is analyzed in depth in this paper. Based on the investigation, an example parameters set of a GLSF SSMB storage ring which can deliver 1 kW-average-power EUV light is presented. The presented work here, like the analysis on theoretical minimum emittances, transverse-longitudinal coupling dynamics, derivation of bunching factor and modulation strengths, is expected to be useful not only for the development of SSMB, but also future accelerator light sources in general which demand more and more precise electron beam phase space manipulations.

Nonlinearly Shaped Pulses in Photoinjectors and Free-Electron Lasers

Abstract:Photoinjectors and Free Electron Lasers (FEL) are amongst the most advanced systems in accelerator physics and have consistently pushed the boundaries of emittance and x-ray peak power. In this paper, laser shaping at the cathode is proposed to further lower the emittance and reduce electron beam tails, which would result in brighter x-ray production. Using dispersion controlled nonlinear shaping (DCNS), laser pulses and beam dynamics were simulated in LCLS-II. The photoinjector emittance was optimized and the resulting e-beam profiles were then simulated and optimized in the linac. Finally, the expected FEL performance is estimated and compared to the current technology: Gaussian laser pulses on the cathode. The e-beams produced by DCNS pulses show a potential for 35% increase in x-ray power per pulse during SASE when compared to the standard Gaussian laser pulses.

Abstract:Recent investigations of RF copper structures operated at cryogenic temperatures performed by a SLAC-UCLA collaboration have shown a dramatic increase in the maximum surface electric field, to 500 MV/m. We examine use of these fields to enable very high field cryogenic photoinjectors that can attain over an order of magnitude increase in peak electron beam brightness. We present beam dynamics studies relevant to X-ray FEL injectors, using start-to-end simulations that show the high brightness and low emittance of this source enables operation of a compact FEL reaching a photon energy of 80 keV. The preservation of beam brightness in compression, exploiting micro-bunching techniques is discussed. While the gain in brightness at high field is due to increase of the emission current density, further increases in brightness due to lowering of the intrinsic cathode emittance in cryogenic operation are also enabled. While the original proposal for this type of cryogenic, ultra-high field photoinjector has emphasized S-band designs, there are numerous potential advantages that may be conferred by operation in C-band. We examine issues related to experimental implementation in C-band, and expected performance of this type of device in a future hard X-ray FEL such as MaRIE.
