Abstract:We establish the asymptotic expansion of certain integrals of [Formula: see text] classes on moduli spaces of curves [Formula: see text], when either the [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text] goes to infinity. Our main tools are cut-join type recursion formulae from the Witten–Kontsevich theorem, as well as asymptotics of solutions to the first Painlevé equation. We also raise a conjecture on large genus asymptotics for [Formula: see text]-point functions of [Formula: see text] classes and partially verify the positivity of coefficients in generalized Mirzakhani’s formula of higher Weil–Petersson volumes.
Large-$n$ asymptotics for Weil-Petersson volumes of moduli spaces of bordered hyperbolic surfaces

Abstract:We study the geometry and spectral theory of Weil-Petersson random surfaces with genus-$g$ and $n$ cusps in the large-$n$ limit. We show that for a random hyperbolic surface in $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ with $n$ large, the number of small Laplacian eigenvalues is linear in $n$ with high probability. By work of Ballmann, Matthiesen and Mondal [7], this result is optimal up to a multiplicative constant. We also study the relative frequency of simple and non-simple closed geodesics, showing that on random surfaces with many cusps, most closed geodesics with lengths up to $\log(n)$ scales are non-simple. Our main technical contribution is a novel large-$n$ asymptotic formula for the Weil-Petersson volume $V_{g,n}\left(\ell_{1},\dots,\ell_{k}\right)$ of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}\left(\ell_{1},\dots,\ell_{k}\right)$ of genus-$g$ hyperbolic surfaces with $k$ geodesic boundary components and $n-k$ cusps with $k$ fixed, building on work of Manin and Zograf [31].

Abstract:We present a new method, using asymptotic analysis, to obtain a system of recursion relations for integrals on moduli spaces of curves. By applying the asymptotic analysis on the join-cut relation of the ELSV formula, we derive the recursion relation of R. Dijkgraaf and E. and H. Verlinde, which is exactly the Virasoro constraints for topological gravity. This gives an alternative proof of Wittens Conjecture using asymptotic analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, we study effective recursion formulae for computing intersection numbers of mixed psi and kappa classes on moduli spaces of curves. By using the celebrated Witten-Kontsevich theorem, we generalize Mulase-Safnuk form of Mirzakhani's recursion and prove a recursion formula of higher Weil-Petersson volumes. We also present recursion formulae to compute intersection pairings in the tautological rings of moduli spaces of curves.

Abstract:Weil-Petersson volumes are the volumes of the moduli spaces of bordered Riemann surfaces and have played an important role in the relationship between two-dimensional quantum gravity and algebraic geometry. In the last couple years progress has been made to understand their role in the context of matrix models, where it is possible to define a generalization of the volumes in terms of an infinite set of coupling constants $t_k$. Using a recent open string matrix model construction we calculate the generalized Weil-Petersson volumes for fixed genus $g = 0,1$ and an arbitrary number of boundaries $n$. Both results are expressed in terms of the perturbative expansion of the solution to the string equation of the matrix model in the closed string sector. The formalism has the added benefit of applying to type 0A superstring matrix models with nonzero Ramond-Ramond flux.

Abstract:In this paper we study the systole function along Weil-Petersson geodesics. We show that the square root of the systole function is uniformly Lipschitz on Teichmfiller space endowed with the Weil-Petersson metric. As an application, we study the growth of the Weil-Petersson inradius of moduli space of Riemann surfaces of genus g with n punctures as a function of g and n. We show that the Weil-Petersson inradius is comparable to root ln g with respect to g, and is comparable to 1 with respect to n. Moreover, we also study the asymptotic behavior, as g goes to infinity, of the Weil-Petersson volumes of geodesic balls of finite radii in Teichmfiller space. We show that they behave like o(( 1/g)((3-epsilon)g)) as g -> infinity, where epsilon > 0 is arbitrary.

Abstract:Let ${\mathcal{M}_{g,\epsilon}}$ be the ${\epsilon}$ -thick part of the moduli space ${\mathcal{M}_g}$ of closed genus g surfaces. In this article, we show that the number of balls of radius r needed to cover ${\mathcal{M}_{g,\epsilon}}$ is bounded below by ${(c_1g)^{2g}}$ and bounded above by ${(c_2g)^{2g}}$, where the constants c 1, c 2depend only on ${\epsilon}$ and r, and in particular not on g. Using this counting result we prove that there are Riemann surfaces of arbitrarily large injectivity radius that are not close (in the Teichmüller metric) to a finite cover of a fixed closed Riemann surface. This result illustrates the sharpness of the Ehrenpreis conjecture.

[11] and Aggarwal et al. [4] for the large genus asymptotics of Vol Q(g,n) and of the associated area Siegel-Veech constants. Volumes of moduli spaces of flat surfaces

Abstract:We study the moduli spaces of flat surfaces with prescribed conical singularities. Veech showed that these spaces are diffeomorphic to the moduli spaces of marked Riemann surfaces, and endowed with a natural volume form depending on the orders of the singularities. We show that the volumes of these spaces are finite. Moreover we show that they are explicitely computable by induction on the Euler characteristics of the punctured surface for almost all orders of the singularities.

Abstract:We propose a refined expression for the large genus asymptotics of the Weil-Petersson volumes of the moduli space of super-Riemann surfaces with an arbitrary number of boundaries. Our formula leverages the connection between JT supergravity and its matrix model definition, utilizing some basic tools of resurgence theory. The final result holds for arbitrary boundary lengths and preserves the polynomial structure of the super-volumes. As a byproduct we also obtain a prediction for the large genus asymptotics of generalized $\Theta$-class intersection numbers. We extend our proposal to the case of the quantum volumes relevant for the Virasoro minimal string/Liouville gravity. Performing the classical limit on the quantum volumes, we recover a formula for the ordinary Weil-Petersson building blocks of JT gravity.

Prime geodesic theorem and closed geodesics for large genus

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{M}_g$ be the moduli space of hyperbolic surfaces of genus $g$ endowed with the Weil-Petersson metric. In this paper, we show that for any $\epsilon>0$, as $g\to \infty$, for a generic surface in $\mathcal{M}_g$, the error term in the Prime Geodesic Theorem is bounded from above by $g\cdot t^{\frac{3}{4}+\epsilon}$, up to a uniform constant multiplication. The expected value of the error term in the Prime Geodesic Theorem over $\mathcal{M}_g$ is also studied. As an application, we show that as $g\to \infty$, on a generic hyperbolic surface in $\mathcal{M}_g$ most closed geodesics of length significantly less than $\sqrt{g}$ are simple and non-separating, and most closed geodesics of length significantly greater than $\sqrt{g}$ are not simple, which confirms a conjecture of Lipnowski-Wright. A novel effective upper bound for intersection numbers on $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ is also established, when certain indices are large compared to $\sqrt{g+n}$.

Abstract:A meander can be seen as a pair of transversally intersecting simple closed curves on a 2-sphere. We consider pairs of transversally intersecting simple closed curves on a closed oriented surface of arbitrary genus g. The number of such higher genus meanders admits exponential upper and lower bounds as the number of intersections grows. Fixing the number n of bigons in the complement to the union of the two curves, we compute the precise asymptotics of genus g meanders with at most 2N intersections and show that this asymptotics is polynomial in N as N tends to infinity. We obtain a similar result for the number of positively intersecting pairs of oriented simple closed curves on a surface of genus g. We also compute the asymptotic probability of getting a meander from a random braid on a surface of genus g-1 with two boundary components. In order to effectively count meanders we identify them with integer points represented by certain square-tiled surfaces in the moduli spaces of Abelian and quadratic differentials and make use of recent advances in the geometry of these moduli spaces combined with asymptotic properties of Witten-Kontsevich 2-correlators on moduli spaces of complex curves.

Abstract:Let S be a surface of genus g with p punctures with negative Euler characteristic. We study the diameter of the $\epsilon$-thick part of moduli space of S equipped with the Teichmüller or Thurston's Lipschitz metric. We show that the asymptotic behaviors in both metrics are of order $\log \frac{g+p}{\epsilon}$. The same result also holds for the $\epsilon$-thick part of the moduli space of metric graphs of rank n equipped with the Lipschitz metric. The proof involves a sorting algorithm that sorts an arbitrary labeled tree with n labels with simultaneous Whitehead moves, where the number of steps is of order log(n).

Abstract:In this paper we study volumes of moduli spaces of hyperbolic surfaces with geodesic, cusp and cone boundary components. We compute the volumes in some new cases, in particular when there exists a large cone angle. This allows us to give geometric meaning to Mirzakhani's polynomials under substitution of imaginary valued boundary lengths, corresponding to hyperbolic cone angles, and to study the behaviour of the volume under the $2\pi$ limit of a cone angle.

Abstract:Let X_n := \bar M_{0,n}, the moduli space of n-pointed stable genus zero curves, and let X_{n,m} be the quotient of X_n by the action of the symmetric group S_{n-m} on the last n-m marked points. The cones of effective divisors of X_{n,m}, m = 0,1,2, are calculated. Using this, upper bounds for the cones Mov(X_{n,m}) generated by divisors with moving linear systems are calculated, m = 0,1, along with the induced bounds on the cones of ample divisors of \bar M_g and \bar M_{g,1}. As an application, the cone of effective divisors of \bar M_{2,1} is analyzed in detail.

Super Weil-Petersson measures on the moduli space of curves

Abstract:The super Weil-Petersson metric defined over the moduli space of smooth super curves produces a natural measure over the moduli space of smooth curves. The construction of the measure uses the extra data of a spin structure on each smooth curve. When we allow marked points, the construction produces a collection of measures indexed by the behaviour of the spin structure at marked points -- Neveu-Schwarz or Ramond. In this paper we define these measures, and prove that they are finite. Each total measure gives the super volume of the moduli space of super curves with marked points. The Neveu-Schwarz volumes are polynomials that satisfy a recursion relation discovered by Stanford and Witten, analogous to Mirzakhani's recursion relations between Weil-Petersson volumes of moduli spaces of hyperbolic surfaces. We prove here that the Ramond boundary behaviour produces deformations of the Neveu-Schwarz volume polynomials, satisfying a variant of the Stanford-Witten recursion relations.

Abstract:Traces of singular moduli can be approximated by exponential sums of quadratic irrationals. Recently Andersen and Duke used theory of Maass forms to estimate generalized twisted traces with power-saving error bounds. We establish an asymptotic formula with effective error bounds for such traces. Our methods depend on an explicit bound for sums of Kloosterman sums on $\Gamma_0(4)$.

Abstract:We give a complete description of the behavior of the volume function at the boundary of the pseudoeffective cone of certain Calabi-Yau complete intersections known as Wehler N-folds. We find that the volume function exhibits a pathological behavior when N>=3, we obtain examples of a pseudoeffective R-divisor D for which the volume of D+sA, with s small and A ample, oscillates between two powers of s, and we deduce the sharp regularity of this function answering a question of Lazarsfeld. We also show that h^0(X,[mD]+A) displays a similar oscillatory behavior as m increases, showing that several notions of numerical dimensions of D do not agree and disproving a conjecture of Fujino. We accomplish this by relating the behavior of the volume function along a segment to the visits of a corresponding hyperbolic geodesics to the cusps of a hyperbolic manifold.
