Abstract:A comprehensive introduction to the boundary state approach to Dirichlet branes is given. Various examples of BPS and non-BPS Dirichlet branes are discussed. In particular, the non-BPS states in the duality of Type IIA on K3 and the heterotic string on T4 are analysed in detail.

Abstract:Using extended coherent states, an analytical exact study has been carried out for the quantum Rabi model (QRM) with two arbitrary qubits in a very concise way. The $G$-functions with $2 \times 2$ determinants are generally derived. For the same coupling constants, the simplest $G$-function, resembling that in the one-qubit QRM, can be obtained. Zeros of the $G$-function yield the whole regular spectrum. The exceptional eigenvalues, which do not belong to the zeros of the $G$ function, are obtained in the closed form. The Dark states in the case of the same coupling can be detected clearly in a continued-fraction technique. The present concise solution is conceptually clear and practically feasible to the general two-qubit QRM and therefore has many applications.
Exact quantization conditions and full transseries structures for symmetric anharmonic oscillators

Abstract:We study exact Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin analysis (EWKB) for a PT symmetric quantum mechanics (QM) defined by the potential VPT(x)=ω2x2+gx2K(ix)ε with ω∈R≥0 , g∈R>0 and K,ε∈N to clarify its perturbative/nonperturbative structure. In our analysis, we mainly consider the massless cases, i.e., ω=0 , and derive the exact quantization conditions (QCs) for arbitrary (K,ε) including all perturbative/nonperturbative corrections. From the exact QCs, we clarify full transseries structure of the energy spectra with respect to the inverse energy level expansion, and then formulate the Gutzwiller trace formula, the spectral summation form, and the Euclidean path integral. For the massive cases, i.e., ω>0 , we show the fact that, by requiring the existence of the solution of the exact QCs, the path of analytic continuation in EWKB is uniquely determined for a given N=2K+ε , and in consequence the exact QCs, the energy spectra, and the three formulas are all perturbative. Abstract:We discuss a new class of spectral problems discovered recently which occupies an intermediate position between the exactly-solvable problems (e.g., harmonic oscillator) and all others. The problems belonging to this class are distinguished by the fact that a part of the eigenvalues, and eigenfunctions can be found algebraically, but not the whole spectrum. The reason explaining the existence of the quasi-exactly-solvable problems is a hidden dynamical symmetry present in the hamiltonian. For one-dimensional motion this hidden symmetry isSL(2,R). It is shown that other groups lead to a partial algebraization in multidimensional quantal problems. In particular,SL(2,R)×SL(2,R),SO(3) andSL(3,R) are relevant to two-dimensional motion inducing a class of quasi-exactly-solvable two-dimensional hamiltonians. Typically they correspond to systems in a curved space, but sometimes the curvature turns out to be zero. Graded algebras open the possibility of constructing quasi-exactlysolvable hamiltonians acting on multicomponent wave functions. For example, with a (non-minimal) superextension ofSL(2,R) we get a hamiltonian describing the motion of a spinor particle.

Abstract:Expository notes which combine a historical survey of the development of quantum physics with a review of selected mathematical topics in quantization theory (addressed to students that are not complete novices in quantum mechanics). After recalling in the introduction the early stages of the quantum revolution, and recapitulating in Sect. 2.1 some basic notions of symplectic geometry, we survey in Sect. 2.2 the so called prequantization thus preparing the ground for an outline of geometric quantization (Sect. 2.3). In Sect. 3 we apply the general theory to the study of basic examples of quantization of Kaehler manifolds. In Sect. 4 we review the Weyl and Wigner maps and the work of Groenewold and Moyal that laid the foundations of quantum mechanics in phase space, ending with a brief survey of the modern development of deformation quantization. Sect. 5 provides a review of second quantization and its mathematical interpretation. We point out that the treatment of (nonrelativistic) bound states requires going beyond the neat mathematical formalization of the concept of second quantization. An appendix is devoted to Pascual Jordan, the least known among the creators of quantum mechanics and the chief architect of the "theory of quantized matter waves".

Modified Semi-Classical Methods for Nonlinear Quantum Oscillations Problems

Abstract:We develop a modified semi-classical approach to the approximate solution of Schrodinger's equation for certain nonlinear quantum oscillations problems. At lowest order, the Hamilton-Jacobi equation of the conventional semi-classical formalism is replaced by an inverted-potential-vanishing-energy variant thereof. Under smoothness, convexity and coercivity hypotheses on its potential energy function, we prove, using the calculus of variations together with the Banach space implicit function theorem, the existence of a global, smooth `fundamental solution'. Higher order quantum corrections, for ground and excited states, are computed through the integration of associated systems of linear transport equations, and formal expansions for the corresponding energy eigenvalues obtained by imposing smoothness on the quantum corrections to the eigenfunctions. For linear oscillators our expansions naturally truncate, reproducing the well-known solutions for the energy eigenfunctions and eigenvalues. As an application, we calculate a number of terms in the corresponding expansions for the one-dimensional anharmonic oscillators of quartic, sectic, octic, and dectic types and find that our eigenvalue expansions agree with those of Rayleigh/Schrodinger theory, whereas our wave functions more accurately capture the more-rapid-than-gaussian decay. For the quartic oscillator our results strongly suggest that the ground state energy eigenvalue expansion and its associated wave function expansion are Borel summable to yield natural candidates for the actual exact ground state solution and its energy. Our techniques for proving the existence of the crucial `fundamental solution' to the relevant Hamilton Jacobi equation admit infinite dimensional generalizations. In a parallel project we shall show how this construction can be carried out for the Yang-Mills equations in Minkowski spacetime.

An anharmonic alliance: exact WKB meets EPT

Abstract:Certain quantum mechanical systems with a discrete spectrum, whose observables are given by a transseries in $\hbar$, were shown to admit $\hbar_0$-deformations with Borel resummable expansions which reproduce the original model at $\hbar_0=\hbar$. Such expansions were dubbed Exact Perturbation Theory (EPT). We investigate how the above results can be obtained within the framework of the exact WKB method by studying the spectrum of polynomial quantum mechanical systems. Within exact WKB, energy eigenvalues are determined by exact quantization conditions defined in terms of Voros symbols $a_{\gamma_i}$, $\gamma_i$ being their associated cycles, and generally give rise to transseries in $\hbar$. After reviewing how the Borel summability of energy eigenvalues in the quartic anharmonic potential emerges in exact WKB, we extend it to higher order anharmonic potentials with quantum corrections. We then show that any polynomial potential can be $\hbar_0$-deformed to a model where the exact quantization condition reads simply $a_\gamma=-1$ and leads to the EPT Borel resummable series for all energy eigenvalues.

Quantizing the Quantum Uncertainty

Abstract:The spread of the wave-function, or quantum uncertainty, is a key notion in quantum mechanics. At leading order, it is characterized by the quadratic moments of the position and momentum operators. These evolve and fluctuate independently from the position and momentum expectation values. They are extra degrees of quantum mechanics compared to classical mechanics, and encode the shape of wave-packets. Following the logic that quantum mechanics must be lifted to quantum field theory, we discuss the quantization of the quantum uncertainty as an operator acting on wave-functions over field space and derive its discrete spectrum, inherited from the $\textrm{sl}_{2}$ Lie algebra formed by the operators $\hat{x}^{2}$, $\hat{p}^{2}$ and $\widehat{xp}$. We further show how this spectrum appears in the value of the coupling of the effective conformal potential driving the evolution of extended Gaussian wave-packets according to Schrödinger equation, with the quantum uncertainty playing the same role as an effective intrinsic angular momentum. We conclude with an open question: is it possible to see experimental signatures of the quantization of the quantum uncertainty in non-relativistic physics, which would signal the departure from quantum mechanics to a QFT regime?

Abstract:The classical Hamiltonian for which the dynamics is represented by trajectories in a multidimensional phase (coset) space is quantized via Lyapunov analysis. A system of one electron in four sites and the vibration of H2O with Fermi resonance is studied. The quantization condition is that the average Lyapunov exponents show local minima as a function of the classical energy. This means that it requests the least global chaoticity. This quantization algorithm leads to results consistent with those obtained by the quantal models.

Abstract:Geometric quantization is a natural way to construct quantum models starting from classical data. In this work, we start from a symplectic vector space with an inner product and — using techniques of geometric quantization — construct the quantum algebra and equip it with a distinguished state. We compare our result with the construction due to Sorkin — which starts from the same input data — and show that our distinguished state coincides with the Sorkin-Johnson state. Sorkin's construction was originally applied to the free scalar field over a causal set (locally finite, partially ordered set). Our perspective suggests a natural generalization to less linear examples, such as an interacting field.

Abstract:It is proved that quasi-exactly soluble potentials (QESPs) corresponding to an oscillator with harmonic, quartic and sextic terms, for which the $n+1$ lowest levels of a given parity can be determined exactly, may be approximated by WKB equivalent potentials corresponding to deformed anharmonic oscillators of SU$_q$(1,1) symmetry, which have been used for the description of vibrational spectra of diatomic molecules. This connection allows for the immediate approximate determination of all levels of the QESPs.

Abstract:A new method of preparing the pseudo-pure state of a spin system for quantum computation in liquid nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was put forward and demonstrated experimentally. Applying appropriately connected line-selective pulses simultaneously and a field gradient pulse techniques we acquired straightforwardly all pseudo-pure states for two qubits in a single experiment much efficiently. The signal intensity with the pseudo-pure state prepared in this way is the same as that of temporal averaging. Our method is suitable for the system with arbitrary numbers of qubits. As an example of application, a highly structured search algorithm----Hogg's algorithm was also performed on the pseudo-pure state $\mid 00>$ prepared by our method.

One-Dimensional Quasi-Exactly Solvable Schrödinger Equations

Abstract:Quasi-Exactly Solvable Schrödinger Equations occupy an intermediate place between exactly-solvable (e.g. the harmonic oscillator and Coulomb problems etc) and non-solvable ones. Their major property is an explicit knowledge of several eigenstates while the remaining ones are unknown. Many of these problems are of the anharmonic oscillator type with a special type of anharmonicity. The Hamiltonians of quasi-exactly-solvable problems are characterized by the existence of a hidden algebraic structure but do not have any hidden symmetry properties. In particular, all known one-dimensional (quasi)-exactly-solvable problems possess a hidden $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\bf{R})-$ Lie algebra. They are equivalent to the $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\bf{R})$ Euler-Arnold quantum top in a constant magnetic field. Quasi-Exactly Solvable problems are highly non-trivial, they shed light on delicate analytic properties of the Schrödinger Equations in coupling constant. The Lie-algebraic formalism allows us to make a link between the Schrödinger Equations and finite-difference equations on uniform and/or exponential lattices, it implies that the spectra is preserved. This link takes the form of quantum canonical transformation. The corresponding isospectral spectral problems for finite-difference operators are described. The underlying Fock space formalism giving rise to this correspondence is uncovered. For a quite general class of perturbations of unperturbed problems with the hidden Lie algebra property we can construct an algebraic perturbation theory, where the wavefunction corrections are of polynomial nature, thus, can be found by algebraic means.

Abstract:A bstract It has been recently realized that, in the case of polynomial potentials, the exact WKB method can be reformulated in terms of a system of TBA equations. In this paper we study this method in various examples. We develop a graphical procedure due to Toledo, which provides a fast and simple way to study the wall-crossing behavior of the TBA equations. When complemented with exact quantization conditions, the TBA equations can be used to solve spectral problems exactly in Quantum Mechanics. We compute the quantum corrections to the all-order WKB periods in many examples, as well as the exact spectrum for many potentials. In particular, we show how this method can be used to determine resonances in unbounded potentials.

Abstract:Quantum graphs were introduced to model free electrons in organic molecules using a self-adjoint Hamiltonian on a network of intervals. A second graph quantization describes wave propagation on a graph by specifying scattering matrices at the vertices. A question that is frequently raised is the extent to which these models are the same or complementary. In particular, are all energy independent unitary vertex scattering matrices associated with a self-adjoint Hamiltonian? Here we review results related to this issue. In addition, we observe that a self-adjoint Dirac operator with four component spinors produces a secular equation for the graph spectrum that matches the secular equation associated with wave propagation on the graph when the Dirac operator describes particles with zero mass and the vertex conditions do not allow spin rotation at the vertices.

Abstract:We present a quantization scheme of an arbitrary measure space based on overcomplete families of states and generalizing the Klauder and the Berezin-Toeplitz approaches. This scheme could reveal itself as an efficient tool for quantizing physical systems for which more traditional methods like geometric quantization are uneasy to implement. The procedure is illustrated by (mostly two-dimensional) elementary examples in which the measure space is a $N$-element set and the unit interval. Spaces of states for the $N$-element set and the unit interval are the 2-dimensional euclidean $\R^2$ and hermitian $\C^2$ planes.

Quantum Hamilton-Jacobi Theory, Spectral Path Integrals and Exact-WKB

Abstract:We propose a new way to perform path integrals in quantum mechanics by using a quantum version of Hamilton-Jacobi theory. In classical mechanics, Hamilton-Jacobi theory is a powerful formalism, however, its utility is not explored in quantum theory beyond the correspondence principle. The canonical transformation enables one to set the new Hamiltonian to constant or zero, but keeps the information about solution in Hamilton's characteristic function. To benefit from this in quantum theory, one must work with a formulation in which classical Hamiltonian is used. This uniquely points to phase space path integral. However, the main variable in HJ-formalism is energy, not time. Thus, we are led to consider Fourier transform of path integral, spectral path integral, $\tilde Z(E)$. This admits a representation in terms of a quantum Hamilton's characteristic functions for perturbative and non-perturbative periodic orbits, generalizing Gutzwiller's sum. This results in a path integral derivation of exact quantization conditions, complementary to the exact WKB analysis of differential equations. We apply these to generic $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetric multi-well potential problems and point out some new instanton effects, e.g., the level splitting is generically a multi-instanton effect, unlike double-well.

Quasi-exactly solvable potentials in Wigner-Dunkl quantum mechanics

Abstract:It is shown that the Dunkl harmonic oscillator on the line can be generalized to a quasi-exactly solvable one, which is an anharmonic oscillator with $n+1$ known eigenstates for any $n\in \N$. It is also proved that the Hamiltonian of the latter can also be rewritten in a simpler way in terms of an extended Dunkl derivative. Furthermore, the Dunkl isotropic oscillator and Dunkl Coulomb potentials in the plane are generalized to quasi-exactly solvable ones. In the former case, potentials with $n+1$ known eigenstates are obtained, whereas, in the latter, sets of $n+1$ potentials associated with a given energy are derived.

Abstract:A temporally varying discretization often features in discrete gravitational systems and appears in lattice field theory models subject to a coarse graining or refining dynamics. To better understand such discretization changing dynamics in the quantum theory, an according formalism for constrained variational discrete systems is constructed. While the present manuscript focuses on global evolution moves and, for simplicity, restricts to Euclidean configuration spaces, a companion article discusses local evolution moves. In order to link the covariant and canonical picture, the dynamics of the quantum states is generated by propagators which satisfy the canonical constraints and are constructed using the action and group averaging projectors. This projector formalism offers a systematic method for tracing and regularizing divergences in the resulting state sums. Non-trivial coarse graining evolution moves lead to non-unitary, and thus irreversible, projections of physical Hilbert spaces and Dirac observables such that these concepts become evolution move dependent on temporally varying discretizations. The formalism is illustrated in a toy model mimicking a `creation from nothing'. Subtleties arising when applying such a formalism to quantum gravity models are discussed.
