Abstract:Vacuum polarization in external fields is treated by way of calculating - exactly and then perturbatively - the phase of the quantum scattering matrix in the Shale-Stinespring approach to field theory. The link between the Shale-Stinespring method and the Epstein-Glaser renormalization procedure is highlighted.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the treatment method of vacuum polarization in an external field. Specifically, it is achieved by calculating the phase of the quantum scattering matrix. The paper uses the Shale - Stinespring method to perform exact and perturbative calculations on linear quantum field theory and explores the connection between this method and the Epstein - Glaser renormalization procedure. The main goal is to prove that for realizable linear theories, the phase of the scattering matrix is well - defined and finite, and to give a specific expression for the phase. In addition, the paper also verifies these results through the perturbative version in QED, simplifies the complexity of calculating vacuum polarization by Scharf et al. using the Epstein - Glaser method, and to some extent supports Scharf and his followers' view that the Epstein - Glaser renormalization procedure is a fundamental method.
