Abstract:Driven by outstanding success stories of Internet startups such as Facebook and The Huffington Post, recent studies have thoroughly described their growth. These highly visible online success stories, however, overshadow an untold number of similar ventures that fail. The study of website popularity is ultimately incomplete without general mechanisms that can describe both successes and failures. In this work we present six years of the daily number of users (DAU) of twenty-two membership-based websites - encompassing online social networks, grassroots movements, online forums, and membership-only Internet stores - well balanced between successes and failures. We then propose a combination of reaction-diffusion-decay processes whose resulting equations seem not only to describe well the observed DAU time series but also provide means to roughly predict their evolution. This model allows an approximate automatic DAU-based classification of websites into self-sustainable v.s. unsustainable and whether the startup growth is mostly driven by marketing & media campaigns or word-of-mouth adoptions.

Abstract:In this text, we study the temporal behavior of markets using models expressible as ordinary differential equations. The markets studied are those where each customer buys only one copy of the good, for example, subscription of smartphone service, journals and newspapers, and goods such as books, music and games. The underlying model is the diffusion model of Frank Bass. Evolution of markets with no competitors and markets with several competitors are analyzed where, in particulat, the effects of churning upon the market evolution is investigated. Analytic solutions are given for the temporal evolution of several types of interactive games.

Abstract:We consider a dynamical network model in which two competitors have fixed and different states, and each normal agent adjusts its state according to a distributed consensus protocol. The state of each normal agent converges to a steady value which is a convex combination of the competitors' states, and is independent of the initial states of agents. This implies that the competition result is fully determined by the network structure and positions of competitors in the network. We compute an Influence Matrix (IM) in which each element characterizing the influence of an agent on another agent in the network. We use the IM to predict the bias of each normal agent and thus predict which competitor will win. Furthermore, we compare the IM criterion with seven node centrality measures to predict the winner. We find that the competitor with higher Katz Centrality in an undirected network or higher PageRank in a directed network is much more likely to be the winner. These findings may shed new light on the role of network structure in competition and to what extent could competitors adjust network structure so as to win the competition.

Abstract:Ever since the web began, the number of websites has been growing exponentially. These websites cover an ever-increasing range of online services that fill a variety of social and economic functions across a growing range of industries. Yet the networked nature of the web, combined with the economics of preferential attachment, increasing returns and global trade, suggest that over the long run a small number of competitive giants are likely to dominate each functional market segment, such as search, retail and social media. Here we perform a large scale longitudinal study to quantify the distribution of attention given in the online environment to competing organisations. In two large online social media datasets, containing more than 10 billion posts and spanning more than a decade, we tally the volume of external links posted towards the organisations' main domain name as a proxy for the online attention they receive. We also use the Common Crawl dataset -- which contains the linkage patterns between more than a billion different websites -- to study the patterns of link concentration over the past three years across the entire web. Lastly, we showcase the linking between economic, financial and market data by exploring the relationships between online attention on social media and the growth in enterprise value in the electric carmaker Tesla. Our analysis shows that despite the fact that we observe consistent growth in all the macro indicators -- the total amount of online attention, in the number of organisations with an online presence, and in the functions they perform -- we also observe that a smaller number of organisations account for an ever-increasing proportion of total user attention, usually with one large player dominating each function. These results highlight how evolution of the online economy involves innovation, diversity, and then competitive dominance.

Abstract:A series of models and examples demonstrate the “why-what-how-when” discipline for strategic management. This approach emphasizes the importance of context – the business landscape in which strategies succeed or fail. The causes and implications of three inter-connected sets of dynamics are explained: competition within a generation of technology or business model; competition between generations of technology or business model; and competition over multiple cycles of innovation, investment, demand growth, and profitability. Think of them as waves nested within waves. Winners understand, anticipate, and influence these market dynamics. They stay ahead of the dynamics, building trust-based relationships and exploiting the learn more/serve better model. Examples are drawn from energy, financial services, telecommunications, and aviation markets. They show how the framework can be used to develop and execute winning strategies, how it can guide the successful reinvention of a market participant, and how it can illuminate the objectives of competition and the definition of winning. The causes of commoditization and strategic options for contending with a commoditized market are analyzed. Technology is an enabler. It increasingly is in the background, making things easy and seamless for customers, providing a superb customer experience, personalizing relationships, and customizing products and services. A business reinvention specialist explains why it is difficult for large organizations to innovate in an ongoing manner and how they can innovate without having to change core processes or culture.

Abstract:We propose a dynamical model of price formation on a spatial market where sellers and buyers are placed on the nodes of a graph, and the distribution of the buyers depends on the positions and prices of the sellers. We find that, depending on the positions of the sellers and on the level of information available, the price dynamics of our model can either converge to fixed prices, or produce cycles of different amplitudes and periods. We show how to measure the strength of competition in a spatial network by extracting the exponent of the scaling of the prices with the size of the system. As an application, we characterize the different level of competition in street networks of real cities across the globe. Finally, using the model dynamics we can define a novel measure of node centrality, which quantifies the relevance of a node in a competitive market.

Abstract:We develop a game-theoretic framework for the study of competition between firms who have budgets to "seed" the initial adoption of their products by consumers located in a social network. The payoffs to the firms are the eventual number of adoptions of their product through a competitive stochastic diffusion process in the network. This framework yields a rich class of competitive strategies, which depend in subtle ways on the stochastic dynamics of adoption, the relative budgets of the players, and the underlying structure of the social network. We identify a general property of the adoption dynamics --- namely, decreasing returns to local adoption --- for which the inefficiency of resource use at equilibrium (the Price of Anarchy) is uniformly bounded above, across all networks. We also show that if this property is violated the Price of Anarchy can be unbounded, thus yielding sharp threshold behavior for a broad class of dynamics. We also introduce a new notion, the Budget Multiplier, that measures the extent that imbalances in player budgets can be amplified at equilibrium. We again identify a general property of the adoption dynamics --- namely, proportional local adoption between competitors --- for which the (pure strategy) Budget Multiplier is uniformly bounded above, across all networks. We show that a violation of this property can lead to unbounded Budget Multiplier, again yielding sharp threshold behavior for a broad class of dynamics.

Abstract:Traditional empirical models of propagation consider individual contagion as an independent process, thus spreading in isolation manner. In this paper, we study how different contagions interact with each other as they spread through the network in order to propose an alternative dynamics model for information propagation. The proposed model is a novel combination of Lotka-Volterra cooperative model and competitive model. It is assumed that the interaction of one message on another is flexible instead of always negative. We prove that the impact of competition depends on the critical speed of the messages. By analyzing the differential equations, one or two stable equilibrium points can be found under certain conditions. Simulation results not only show the correctness of our theoretical analyses but also provide a more attractive conclusion. Different types of messages could coexist in the condition of high critical speed and intense competitive environment, or vice versa. The messages will benefit from the high critical speed when they are both competitive, and adopting a Tit-for-Tat strategy is necessary during the process of information propagation.

Abstract:Sponsored search mechanisms have drawn much attention from both academic community and industry in recent years since the seminal papers of [3] and [4]. However, most of the existing literature concentrates on the mechanism design and analysis within the scope of only one search engine in the market. In this paper we propose a mathematical framework for modeling the interaction of publishers, advertisers and end users in a competitive market. We study the competition between two search engines as a three-stage dynamic game and prove the existence of Nash equilibrium prices when allowing advertisers to participate in both advertising systems simultaneously. To compare the expected revenues and social welfare under competition and monopoly, we carry out extensive simulation under common parameter setting of participants. Our results can provide useful insight in regulating the sponsored search market and protecting the interests of advertisers and end users.

Abstract:The authors' model of Internet pricing competition shows how differences in switching costs, increasing returns to scale, and discount rates between pure and hybrid e-tailers affected their choice of pricing objective. During the run-up of Internet stocks, differences in these determinants motivated pure e-tailers to build their customer base, whereas hybrid e-tailers leveraged their relationship with existing (offline) customers. In the resulting two-tiered pricing structure, pure e-tailers offered substantially lower prices than hybrid e-tailers. The dot.com crash of April 2000 increased the discount rate for pure e-tailers. Using a longitudinal database of printer prices, the authors' model correctly predicts changes in overall price dispersion and the direction and magnitude of price changes for pure and hybrid e-tailers associated with this change in the financial markets. This study illustrates how changes in financial markets can affect pricing competition among Internet retailers in a single category.
Experience versus Talent Shapes the Structure of the Web

Abstract:We use sequential large-scale crawl data to empirically investigate and validate the dynamics that underlie the evolution of the structure of the web. We find that the overall structure of the web is defined by an intricate interplay between experience or entitlement of the pages (as measured by the number of inbound hyperlinks a page already has), inherent talent or fitness of the pages (as measured by the likelihood that someone visiting the page would give a hyperlink to it), and the continual high rates of birth and death of pages on the web. We find that the web is conservative in judging talent and the overall fitness distribution is exponential, showing low variability. The small variance in talent, however, is enough to lead to experience distributions with high variance: The preferential attachment mechanism amplifies these small biases and leads to heavy-tailed power-law (PL) inbound degree distributions over all pages, as well as over pages that are of the same age. The balancing act between experience and talent on the web allows newly introduced pages with novel and interesting content to grow quickly and surpass older pages. In this regard, it is much like what we observe in high-mobility and meritocratic societies: People with entitlement continue to have access to the best resources, but there is just enough screening for fitness that allows for talented winners to emerge and join the ranks of the leaders. Finally, we show that the fitness estimates have potential practical applications in ranking query results.

Abstract:A substantial number of studies have extended the work on universal properties in physical systems to complex networks in social, biological, and technological systems. In this paper, we present a complex networks perspective on interfirm organizational networks by mapping, analyzing and modeling the spatial structure of a large interfirm competition network across a variety of sectors and industries within the United States. We propose two micro-dynamic models that are able to reproduce empirically observed characteristics of competition networks as a natural outcome of a minimal set of general mechanisms governing the formation of competition networks. Both models, which utilize different approaches yet apply common principles to network formation give comparable results. There is an asymmetry between companies that are considered competitors, and companies that consider others as their competitors. All companies only consider a small number of other companies as competitors; however, there are a few companies that are considered as competitors by many others. Geographically, the density of corporate headquarters strongly correlates with local population density, and the probability two firms are competitors declines with geographic distance. We construct these properties by growing a corporate network with competitive links using random incorporations modulated by population density and geographic distance. Our new analysis, methodology and empirical results are relevant to various phenomena of social and market behavior, and have implications to research fields such as economic geography, economic sociology, and regional economic development.
Growth, Inequality and Declining Business Dynamism in a Unified Schumpeter Mark I + II Model

Abstract:I develop a simple Schumpeterian agent-based model where the entry and exit of firms, their productivity and markup, the birth of new industries and the social structure of the population are endogenous and use it to study the causes of rising inequality and "declining business dynamism" since the 1980s. My hybrid model combines features of i) the so-called Schumpeter Mark I (centering around the entrepreneur), ii) the Mark II model (emphasizing the innovative capacities of firms), and iii) Cournot competition, with firms using OLS learning to estimate the market environment and the behavior of their competitors. A scenario which is quantitatively calibrated to US data on growth and inequality replicates a large number of stylized facts regarding the industry life-cycle, growth, inequality and all ten stylized facts on "declining business dynamism" proposed by Akcigit and Ates (AEJ:Macro, 2021). Counterfactual simulations show that antitrust policy is highly effective at combatting inequality and increasing business dynamism and growth, but is subject to a conflict of interest between workers and firm owners, as GDP and wages grow at the expense of profits. Technological factors, on the other hand, are much less effective in combatting declining business dynamism in my model.

Digital Ecology: Coexistence and Domination among Interacting Networks

Abstract:The overwhelming success of the web 2.0, with online social networks as key actors, has induced a paradigm shift in the nature of human interactions. The user-driven character of these services for the first time has allowed researchers to quantify large-scale social patterns. However, the mechanisms that determine the fate of networks at a system level are still poorly understood. For instance, the simultaneous existence of numerous digital services naturally raises the question under which conditions these services can coexist. In analogy to population dynamics, the digital world is forming a complex ecosystem of interacting networks whose fitnesses depend on their ability to attract and maintain users' attention, which constitutes a limited resource. In this paper, we introduce an ecological theory of the digital world which exhibits a stable coexistence of several networks as well as the domination of a single one, in contrast to the principle of competitive exclusion. Interestingly, our model also predicts that the most probable outcome is the coexistence of a moderate number of services, in agreement with empirical observations.

Non-equilibrium phase transitions in competitive markets caused by network effects

Abstract:Network effects are the added value derived solely from the popularity of a product in an economic market. Using agent-based models inspired by statistical physics, we propose a minimal theory of a competitive market for (nearly) indistinguishable goods with demand-side network effects, sold by statistically identical sellers. With weak network effects, the model reproduces conventional microeconomics: there is a statistical steady state of (nearly) perfect competition. Increasing network effects, we find a phase transition to a robust non-equilibrium phase driven by the spontaneous formation and collapse of fads in the market. When sellers update prices sufficiently quickly, an emergent monopolist can capture the market and undercut competition, leading to a symmetry- and ergodicity-breaking transition. The non-equilibrium phase simultaneously exhibits three empirically established phenomena not contained in the standard theory of competitive markets: spontaneous price fluctuations, persistent seller profits, and broad distributions of firm market shares.

Abstract:This paper develops two theoretical models to explain why multichannel retailers (MCRs) usually price higher than pure Internet retailers (DotComs), a regular pattern observed in many empirical studies. In the first game-theoretical model, we assume that the number of non-MCRs in the conventional market is exogenously determined, while consumers are classified into three discrete groups: (a) aggressive consumers, (b) discreet online consumers, and (c) offline consumers. We relax the first constraint in the second model so that all retailers in the Brick & Mortar sector are potential MCRs. Before setting prices, these retailers have to make their entry choices. Then, the pricing distribution becomes related to the factors such as the number of retailers in two markets, the search costs, and the pricing strategies of the retailers in the online market. We explore how the different types of retailers compete in the dual channels. We find that MCRs benet from the existence of their conventional stores, since they can charge higher prices than marginal production cost and earn positive profits. However, if DotComs cannot differentiate themselves by building loyal consumers or investing in the new technology, they face the severe competition both from their own type and from MCRs, and gain zero profits. The price dispersion may exist in the long term due to the pricing strategy for MCRs to conciliate the competition in online market.

Abstract:We analyze digital markets where a monopolist platform uses data to match multiproduct sellers with heterogeneous consumers who can purchase both on and off the platform. The platform sells targeted ads to sellers that recommend their products to consumers and reveals information to consumers about their values. The revenue-optimal mechanism is a managed advertising campaign that matches products and preferences efficiently. In equilibrium, sellers offer higher qualities at lower unit prices on than off the platform. Privacy-respecting data-governance rules such as organic search results or federated learning can lead to welfare gains for consumers.

Abstract:This paper based on Lotka-Volterra model analyses the dynamic competition in China's book E-Business market.From the analsis effect,Lotka-Volterra model has the applicability in competition market and is better fit than the Logistic model,from the analsis result Dangdang holds a more powerful devolop in the monopolistic market,at the same time,it benefits from the imitation innovation,however,the competition relationship between Dangdang and Amazon.cn is predator-prey.The attacker's advantage of Dangdang is nearly half of the defender's counterattack of Amazon.cn,Dangdang and Amazon.cn will not have the equilibrium in recent year,and the gap becomes bigger.This conclusion indicates the E-Business model innovation is more and more important for Dangdang and every E-Business enterprises.

Abstract:Recent researches have seen an upsurge in the analysis of consumer reviews. Although, several dimensions have been explored, less is known on the temporal dynamics of events that happen over the lifecycle of online products. What are the dominant sales patterns? How are they affected by review count, rating, helpfulness and sentiment? How is trust characterized and what are its effects on sales and revenue? What happens during a market competition? When does a takeover/recovery happen and by what percentage do sales increase on a takeover? This work aims to answer these fundamental research questions based on a sales time-series analysis of reviews of over 1 million products from Amazon.com. We discover novel temporal patterns of sales and interesting correlations of sales with the ratings. We find that trust and helpfulness are important for higher revenue. Based on the analyses, we propose a model to forecast sales that significantly outperforms other baselines. We then explore the phenomena of market competition. Particularly, we characterize different factors that govern survival/death of a product under competition and a model for competition forecast. Experimental results on large-scale reviews demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

Abstract:This work is concerned with the dynamics of online cultural markets, namely, attention allocation of many users on a set of digital goods with infinite supply. Such dynamic is important in shaping processes and outcomes in society, from trending items in entertainment, collective knowledge creation, to election outcomes. The outcomes of online cultural markets are susceptible to intricate social influence dynamics, particularly so when the community comprises consumers with heterogeneous interests. This has made formal analysis of these markets improbable. In this paper, we remedy this by establishing robust connections between influence dynamics and optimization processes, in trial-offer markets where the consumer preferences are modelled by multinomial logit. Among other results, we show that the proportional-response-esque influence dynamic is equivalent to stochastic mirror descent on a convex objective function, thus leading to a stable and predictable outcome. When all consumers are homogeneous, the objective function has a natural interpretation as a weighted sum of efficiency and diversity of the culture market. In simulations driven by real-world preferences collected from a large-scale recommender system, we observe that ranking strategies aligned with the underlying heterogeneous preferences are more stable, and achieves higher efficiency and diversity.
