Abstract:A multicanonical formalism is applied to the problem of statistical equilibrium in a complex system with a hierarchy of dynamical structures. At the small scales the system is in quasi-equilibrium and follows a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution with a slowly fluctuating temperature. The probability distribution for the temperature is determined using Bayesian analysis and it is then used to average the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. The resulting energy distribution law is written in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions, which display power-law tails.

Abstract:Macroscopic thermodynamics of equilibrium is constructed for systems obeying power-law canonical distributions. With this, the connection between macroscopic thermodynamics and microscopic statistical thermodynamics is generalized. This is complementary to the Gibbs theorem for the celebrated exponential canonical distributions of systems in contact with a heat bath. Thereby, a thermodynamic basis is provided for power-law phenomena ubiquitous in nature.

Abstract:The theory of probability shows that, as the fraction X_n/Y→ 0, the conditional probability for X_n, given X_n+Y ∈ h_δ:=[h, h+δ], has a limit law f_X_n(x)e^-ψ_n(h_δ)x, where ψ_n(h_δ) equals to [∂ln P(Y ∈ y_δ)/∂ y]_y=h plus an additional term, contributed from the correlation between X_n and bath Y. By applying this limit law to an isolated composite system consisting of two strongly coupled parts, a system of interest and a large but finite bath, we derive the generalized Boltzmann distribution law for the system of interest in the exponential form of a redefined Hamiltonian and corrected Boltzmann temperature that reflects the modification due to strong system-bath coupling and the large but finite bath.

Abstract:Starting from the BBGKY hierarchy, describing the kinetics of nonlinear particle system, we obtain the relevant entropy and stationary distribution function. Subsequently, by employing the Lorentz transformations we propose the relativistic generalization of the exponential and logarithmic functions. The related particle distribution and entropy represents the relativistic extension of the classical Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution and of the Boltzmann entropy respectively and define the statistical mechanics presented in [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 66}, 056125 (2002)] and [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 72}, 036108 (2005). The achievements of the present effort, support the idea that the experimentally observed power law tailed statistical distributions in plasma physics, are enforced by the relativistic microscopic particle dynamics.

Abstract:Links between power law probability distributions and marginal distributions of uniform laws on $p$-spheres in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ show that a mathematical derivation of the Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution necessarily passes through power law ones. Results are also given that link parameters $p$ and $n$ to the value of the non-extensivity parameter $q$ that characterizes these power laws in the context of non-extensive statistics.

Abstract:The Boltzmann distribution is used in statistical mechanics to describe the distribution of states in systems with a given temperature. We give a novel characterization of this distribution as the unique one satisfying independence for uncoupled systems. The theorem boils down to a statement about symmetries of the convolution semigroup of finitely supported probability measures on the natural numbers, or, alternatively, about symmetries of the multiplicative semigroup of polynomials with non-negative coefficients.

The Derivation of the Boltzmann Equation from Quantum Many-body Dynamics

Abstract:We consider the quantum many-body dynamics at the weak-coupling scaling. We derive rigorously the quantum Boltzmann equation, which contains the classical hard sphere model and, effectively, the inverse power law model, from the many-body dynamics assuming a physical and optimal regularity bound. The regularity bound we find, on the one hand, is satisfied by quasi-free solutions and comes from calculations regarding the local Maxwellian solution, in which we also prove that 2-body molecular chaos never happens unless $N=+\infty$; on the other hand, it arises from the well-posedness threshold of the limiting Boltzmann equation below which we prove ill-posedness. That is, the regularity cannot be higher at the $N$-body level, cannot be lower in the limit, and is hence a double criticality. To work with this borderline case, we analyze all four sides, with respect to the Fourier transform, of the BBGKY hierarchy sequence with new tools and techniques. We prove well-definedness, compactness, convergence, and uniqueness of hierarchies right at the criticality to complete an optimal derivation. In particular, we have proved that, for physical $N$-particle solutions, the Boltzmann equation emerges as the mean-field limit and time is hence irreversible, from first principles of quantum mechanics.

Abstract:Over the last two decades, it has been argued that the Lorentz transformation mechanism, which imposes the generalization of Newton's classical mechanics into Einstein's special relativity, implies a generalization, or deformation, of the ordinary statistical mechanics. The exponential function, which defines the Boltzmann's factor, emerges properly deformed within this formalism. Starting from this, so-called $\kappa$-deformed exponential function, we introduce new classes of statistical distributions emerging as the $\kappa$-deformed version of already known distribution as the Generalized Gamma, Weibull, Logistic which can be adopted in the analysis of statistical data that exhibit power-law tails.

A Stochastic Approach to Maxwell Velocity Distribution via Central Limit Theorem and Boltzmann's Entropy Formula

Abstract:Maxwell's velocity distribution is known to be universally valid across systems and phases. Here we present a new and general derivation that uses the central limit theorem (CLT) of the probability theory. This essentially uses the idea that repeated intermolecular collisions introduce randomness in the velocity change in the individual components of the velocity vector, leading to, by the CLT, a Gaussian distribution. To complete the derivation, we next show that the mean-square velocity or the standard deviation follows exactly from Boltzmann's formula relating entropy to the density of states, thus avoiding the use of the ideal gas equation of state explicitly. We furthermore prove the Maxwell velocity distribution for a system of harmonic oscillators. This derivation provides a further insight into the origin of Boltzmann's constant in the Maxwell velocity distribution and also in the equipartition theorem. We propose that this derivation provides an approach that explains the universality of Maxwell Gaussian distribution.

Power-law Scalings in Weakly-Interacting Bose Gases at Quantum Criticality

Abstract:Weakly interacting quantum systems in low dimensions have been investigated for a long time, but there still remain a number of open questions and a lack of explicit expressions of physical properties of such systems. In this work, we find power-law scalings of thermodynamic observables in low-dimensional interacting Bose gases at quantum criticality. We present a physical picture for these systems with the repulsive interaction strength approaching zero; namely, the competition between the kinetic and interaction energy scales gives rise to power-law scalings with respect to the interaction strength in characteristic thermodynamic observables. This prediction is supported by exact Bethe ansatz solutions in one dimension, demonstrating a simple 1/3-power-law scaling of the critical entropy per particle. Our method also yields results in agreement with a non-perturbative renormalization-group computation in two dimensions. These results provide a new perspective for understanding many-body phenomena induced by weak interactions in quantum gases.
Boltzmann Distribution on "Short" Integer Partitions with Power Parts: Limit Laws and Sampling

Abstract:The paper is concerned with the asymptotic analysis of a family of Boltzmann (multiplicative) distributions over the set $\check{\varLambda}^{q}$ of strict integer partitions (i.e., with unequal parts) into perfect $q$-th powers. A combinatorial link is provided via a suitable conditioning by fixing the partition weight (the sum of parts) and length (the number of parts), leading to uniform distribution on the corresponding subspaces of partitions. The Boltzmann measure is calibrated through the hyper-parameters $\langle N\rangle$ and $\langle M\rangle$ controlling the expected weight and length, respectively. We study ``short'' partitions, where the parameter $\langle M\rangle$ is either fixed or grows slower than for typical plain (unconstrained) partitions. For this model, we obtain a variety of limit theorems including the asymptotics of the cumulative cardinality in the case of fixed $\langle M\rangle$ and a limit shape result in the case of slow growth of $\langle M\rangle$. In both cases, we also characterize the joint distribution of the weight and length, as well as the growth of the smallest and largest parts. Using these results we construct suitable sampling algorithms and analyse their performance.

Abstract:The probability distribution of a function of a subsystem conditioned on the value of the function of the whole, in the limit when the ratio of their values goes to zero, has a limit law: It equals the unconditioned marginal probability distribution weighted by an exponential factor whose exponent is uniquely determined by the condition. We apply this theorem to explain the canonical equilibrium ensemble of a system in contact with a heat reservoir. Since the theorem only requires analysis at the level of the function of the subsystem and reservoir, it is applicable even without the knowledge of the composition of the reservoir itself, which extends the applicability of the canonical ensemble. Furthermore, we generalize our theorem to a model with strong interaction that contributes an additional term to the exponent, which is beyond the typical case of approximately additive functions. This result is new in both physics and mathematics, as a theory for the Gibbs conditioning principle for strongly correlated systems. A corollary provides a precise formulation of what a temperature bath is in probabilistic term

Abstract:Within the framework of stochastic differential equations it is demonstrated that the existence of Boltzmann–Gibbs type distribution in economy is independent of the time reversal symmetry in econodynamics. Both power law and exponential distributions can be accommodated naturally. The demonstration is based on a mathematical structure discovered during a study in gene regulatory network dynamics. Further possible analogy between equilibrium economy and thermodynamics is explored, suggesting that statistical physics methods can indeed play an important role in the study of complex systems.

Abstract:Power-law distributions occur in many situations of scientific interest and have significant consequences for our understanding of natural and man-made phenomena. Unfortunately, the detection and characterization of power laws is complicated by the large fluctuations that occur in the tail of the distributionthe part of the distribution representing large but rare eventsand by the difficulty of identifying the range over which power-law behavior holds. Commonly used methods for analyzing power-law data, such as least-squares fitting, can produce substantially inaccurate estimates of parameters for power-law distributions, and even in cases where such methods return accurate answers they are still unsatisfactory because they give no indication of whether the data obey a power law at all. Here we present a principled statistical framework for discerning and quantifying power-law behavior in empirical data. Our approach combines maximum-likelihood fitting methods with goodness-of-fit tests based on the KolmogorovSmirnov (KS) statistic and likelihood ratios. We evaluate the effectiveness of the approach with tests on synthetic data and give critical comparisons to previous approaches. We also apply the proposed methods to twenty-four real-world data sets from a range of different disciplines, each of which has been conjectured to follow a power-law distribution. In some cases we find these conjectures to be consistent with the data, while in others the power law is ruled out.

Abstract:Boltzmann's principle S=k ln W allows to extend equilibrium thermo-statistics to ``Small'' systems without invoking the thermodynamic limit. The clue is to base statistical probability on ensemble averaging and not on time averaging. It is argued that due to the incomplete information obtained by macroscopic measurements thermodynamics handles ensembles or finite-sized sub-manifolds in phase space and not single time-dependent trajectories. Therefore, ensemble averages are the natural objects of statistical probabilities. This is the physical origin of coarse-graining which is not anymore a mathematical ad hoc assumption. From this concept all equilibrium thermodynamics can be deduced quite naturally including the most sophisticated phenomena of phase transitions for ``Small'' systems. Boltzmann's principle is generalized to non-equilibrium Hamiltonian systems with possibly fractal distributions ${\cal{M}}$ in 6N-dim. phase space by replacing the conventional Riemann integral for the volume in phase space by its corresponding box-counting volume. This is equal to the volume of the closure $\bar{\cal{M}}$. With this extension the Second Law is derived without invoking the thermodynamic limit. The irreversibility in this approach is due to the replacement of the phase-space volume by the volume of its closure $\bar{\cal{M}}$. The physical reason for this replacement is that macroscopic measurements cannot distinguish ${\cal{M}}$ from $\bar{\cal{M}}$. Whereas the former is not changing in time due to Liouville's theorem, the volume of the closure can be larger. In contrast to conventional coarse graining the box-counting volume is defined in the limit of infinite resolution. I.e. there is no artificial loss of information.

Extreme events and power-law distributions from nonlinear quantum dissipation

Abstract:Power-law probability distributions are widely used to model extreme statistical events in complex systems, with applications to a vast array of natural phenomena ranging from earthquakes to stock market crashes to pandemics. We propose the emergence of power-law distributions as a generic feature of quantum systems with strong nonlinear dissipation. We introduce a prototypical family of quantum dynamical systems with nonlinear dissipation, and prove analytically the emergence of power-law tails in the steady state probability distribution for energy. The power law physically originates from the amplification of quantum noise, where the scale of the microscopic fluctuations grows with the energy of the system. Our model predicts a power-law regime with infinite mean energy, which manifests as extreme events and divergences in the measurement statistics. Furthermore, we provide numerical evidence of power-law distributions for a general class of nonlinear dynamics known as quantum Liénard systems. This phenomenon can be potentially harnessed to develop extreme photon sources for novel applications in light-matter interaction and sensing.

Abstract:Many man-made and natural phenomena, including the intensity of earthquakes, population of cities and size of international wars, are believed to follow power-law distributions. The accurate identification of power-law patterns has significant consequences for correctly understanding and modeling complex systems. However, statistical evidence for or against the power-law hypothesis is complicated by large fluctuations in the empirical distribution's tail, and these are worsened when information is lost from binning the data. We adapt the statistically principled framework for testing the power-law hypothesis, developed by Clauset, Shalizi and Newman, to the case of binned data. This approach includes maximum-likelihood fitting, a hypothesis test based on the Kolmogorov--Smirnov goodness-of-fit statistic and likelihood ratio tests for comparing against alternative explanations. We evaluate the effectiveness of these methods on synthetic binned data with known structure, quantify the loss of statistical power due to binning, and apply the methods to twelve real-world binned data sets with heavy-tailed patterns.

Abstract:The density profiles and other quantities of physical interest for spherically symmetric systems are computed by assuming that a collisionless stellar gas may relax to the non-Gaussian power law distribution suggested by the nonextensive kinetic theory. There are two different classes of solutions. The first class behaves like a subset of the polytropic Lane-Emden spheres, whereas the second one corresponds to a transition between two different polytropic indices. Unlike the isothermal Maxwellian sphere, the total mass and sizes of both classes are finite for a large range of the nonextensive q-parameter.
