Abstract:The low-amplitude spatial solitons in biased photovoltaic photorefractive crystals are investigated theoretically. The analytical solutions for both the bright and the dark low-amplitude screening-photovoltaic spatial solitons in photorefractive crystals are obtained. The expressions for the width of these solitons are given. The explicit expressions for the spatial deflection and angular deviation of the bright low-amplitude screening-photovoltaic spatial soliton are also presented by taking into account the effect of diffusion.

Abstract:The temporal behavior and formation characteristics have been investigated for the first time in nonlinear optical media exhibiting photorefractive effect due to simultaneous linear and quadratic electro-optic effect. The space charge field which is a function of time is derived and hence leads to the time dependent wave equation satisfied by light beams in such novel photorefractive materials. The soliton width evolution and hence the evolution of the nonlinearity with time is investigated for different values of peak intensity ratio. The dark soliton formation does not show quasi steady state behaviour and only steady state solitons are formed. There is interplay between the linear and quadratic electro-optic effect that affects the formation of dark solitons. Finally, the effect of crystal temperature on the formation of dark solitons is studied. In a photorefractive crystal, the temperature modification results in consequent changes in dark irradiance and dielectric constant which has a profound effect on the time evolution of these dark solitons. A relevant example of 0.67PMN-0.33PT crystal has been considered for an illustration of our results.

Abstract:We study,theoretically,incoherently coupled screening-photovoltaic soliton pairs in biased photovoltaic photorefractive crystals.It is shown that when the total intensity of two coupled solitons is much lower than the effective dark irradiance,the coupled soliton equations reduce to the Manakov equations.The dark-dark,bright-bright and dark-bright soliton pair solutions of these Manakov equations are obtained under an appropriate external bias field and a photovoltaic field,and the characteristics of these Manakov soliton pairs are also discussed in detail.

Abstract:In this work, we derive a generalized constitutive relation describing the current response to external electromagnetic fields in electrically biased quantum materials. While our semiclassical Boltzmann approach reveals the existence of electro-optic effects induced by the Berry curvature dipole of Bloch electrons, we also find a wealth of alternative electro-optic effects originating from the interplay between Berry curvature and magnetic moment. In particular, our symmetry analysis indicates the existence of a magnetoelectric electro-optic effect, derived from the simultaneous presence of Berry curvature and magnetic moment, that requires either time-reversal or inversion symmetry breaking. The revealed conductivity coefficients are explicitly written and we derive the tensor shape describing such alternative electromagnetic responses for chiral materials pertaining to space groups 152 and 198.

Abstract:This paper reviews recent research performed at the liquid crystals laboratory of the A. V. Shubnikov Institute of Crystallography, Russian Academy of Sciences, focusing on photonic liquid crystalline structures induced by electric fields. Due to field-induced spatial modulation of the refractive index, such structures exhibit optical properties characteristic of photonic crystals. Two types of structures are discussed. The first type is induced in cholesteric liquid crystals with spontaneous formation of a helical director distribution. The orientation transition to a state with a lying helix – with the axis in the plane of the layer – is considered. The second type consists of homogeneous layers of non-chiral nematic liquid crystals, where the modulation of the refractive index arises due to the flexoelectric instability effect. In both cases, periodic boundary conditions of molecule orientation are crucial. Methods of forming boundary conditions and the photonic properties of structures are reviewed.
Chiral optical solitons in an electrically active multiferroic guiding structure

Abstract:A stack of a dielectric planar waveguide with a Kerr-type nonlinearity, sandwiched between two oxide-based helical multiferroic layers is shown to support electrically-controlled chiral solitons. These findings follow from analytical and full numerical simulations. The analytical scheme delivers explicit material parameters for the guided mode soliton and unveils how the soliton propagation characteristics are controlled by tuning the multiferroic helicity and amplitude of the injected electromagnetic wave. Silicon and CS2 are considered as the optical media in the guiding region enclosed by the multiferroic slabs. CS2 has very similar nonlinearity characteristics to silicon but in the linear regime it exhibits a smaller refractive index in the THz frequency range. The scattering simulations are performed using our developed numerical code based on the rigorous coupled wave method and the results for the dispersion curve for the guided mode agree very well with the analytical formula that we derive in this work. The results demonstrate a case of nonlinear pulse generation with field-controlled, nontrivial topological properties.

Abstract:Electrically powered solitons are particle-like field configurations in out-of-equilibrium nematics that have garnered significant interest. However, their random generation and lack of controllable motion have limited their application. Here, we present a reconfigurable optoelectronic approach capable of regulating the entire lifecycle of solitons by utilizing multi-strategy digital light projection to construct delicate patterning of virtual electrode. We demonstrate that optically actuated domains with diverse geometry enable the generation of multiple solitons and further allow in-situ formation of individual soliton by matching the light pattern to its dimension. Exquisitely engineered light intensity of patterns facilitates modulation of soliton velocity and transformation of propagating direction. The utilization of a light-guided channel enables the on-demand control of soliton trajectories along customized paths. Furthermore, dynamic light patterns that vary in space and time allow for collective motion such as migration, mimicking phototaxis in biological systems. This reconfigurable manipulation strategy, grounded in the photoconductive effect, proves highly versatile and effective in directing soliton dynamics, heralding the potential for their programmable control and offering a significant advantage in multitasking scenarios.
Screening Dark Spatial Solitons in Photorefractive Materials

Abstract:In this paper, the dynamical evolution of dark screening solitons in PR media was investigated under steady-state conditions. Our numerical study indicates that these optical dark soliton at lower power level are stable against small perturbations whereas those at higher power level will split into pairs of dark spatial solitons. The influence of loss in refractive materials is studied in detail. The effect of the external bias field on the self-defocusing behavior of dark optical beam is also discussed.

Ultrafast imaging of polariton propagation and interactions

Abstract:Semiconductor excitations can hybridize with cavity photons to form exciton-polaritons (EPs) with remarkable properties, including light-like energy flow combined with matter-like interactions. To fully harness these properties, EPs must retain ballistic, coherent transport despite matter-mediated interactions with lattice phonons. Here we develop a nonlinear momentum-resolved optical approach that directly images EPs in real space on femtosecond scales in a range of polaritonic architectures. We focus our analysis on EP propagation in layered halide perovskite microcavities. We reveal that EP-phonon interactions lead to a large renormalization of EP velocities at high excitonic fractions at room temperature. Despite these strong EP-phonon interactions, ballistic transport is maintained for up to half-exciton EPs, in agreement with quantum simulations of dynamic disorder shielding through light-matter hybridization. Above 50% excitonic character, rapid decoherence leads to diffusive transport. Our work provides a general framework to precisely balance EP coherence, velocity, and nonlinear interactions.

Abstract:Topological polaritons, combining the robustness of the topological protected edge states to defects and disorder with the strong nonlinear properties of polariton bosons, represent an excellent platform to investigate novel photonic topological phases. In this work, we demonstrated the optical spin Hall effect (OSHE) and its symmetry switching in the exciton-polariton regime of pure DPAVBi crystals. Benefiting from the photonic Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling in organic crystals, we observed the separation of left- and right-circularly-polarized polariton emission in two-dimensional momentum space and real space, a signature of the OSHE. Above the lasing threshold, the OSHE pattern changes due to transverse quantization in the microbelt. This device without superlattice structure has great potential applications in topological polaritonics, such as information transmission, photonic integrated chips and quantum information.

Abstract:The light-mediated interaction of fermionic and bosonic excitations governs the optoelectronic properties of condensed matter systems. In photoexcited semiconductors, the coupling of electron-hole pairs (excitons) to coherent optical phonons enables a modulation of the excitonic resonance that is phase-locked to the frequency of the coupled vibrational mode. Moreover, due to the Coulombic nature of excitons, their dynamics are sensitive to transient changes in the screening by the photoexcited carriers. Interestingly, the effect of photoinduced screening on the transient optical signal originating from the exciton dynamics coupled to phonons is not yet established. By means of broadband transient reflectance spectroscopy, we disclose how exciton-phonon coupling manifests in either presence or absence of dynamical screening in a layered semiconductor. Further, we unveil the promoting role of photoinduced screening on these exciton-phonon coupled dynamics as opposed to the case in which the unscreened exciton-exciton repulsion likely dominates the nonequilibrium optical response. These findings set a protocol to look at an excitonic resonance and its fundamental many-body interactions on the ultrafast timescale, and provide new perspectives on the access to nonequilibrium coupled dynamics.

Anomalous shift and optical vorticity in the steady photovoltaic current

Abstract:Steady illumination of a non-centrosymmetric semiconductor results in a bulk photovoltaic current, which is contributed by real-space displacements (`shifts') of charged quasiparticles as they transit between Bloch states. The shift induced by interband excitation via absorption of photons has received the prevailing attention. However, this excitation-induced shift can be far outweighed ($\ll$) by the shift induced by intraband relaxation, or by the shift induced by radiative recombination of electron-hole pairs. This outweighing ($\ll$) is attributed to (i) time-reversal-symmetric, intraband Berry curvature, which results in an anomalous shift of quasiparticles as they scatter with phonons, as well as to (ii) topological singularities in the interband Berry phase (`optical vortices'), which makes the photovoltaic current extraordinarily sensitive to the linear polarization vector of the light source. Both (i-ii) potentially lead to nonlinear conductivities of order $mAV^{-2}$, without finetuning of the incident radiation frequency, band gap, or joint density of states. A case study of BiTeI showcases the anomalous shift and optical vorticity in a realistic material.

Electro-Optic Effect in A Semi-Parabolic Quantum Well with an Applied Electric Field

Abstract:By using the compact density matrix approach, the electro-optic effect (EOE) in a semi-parabolic quantum well (QW) with an applied electric field has been theoretically investigated. Via a variant of displacement harmonic oscillation, the exact electronic states in the semi-parabolic QW with an applied electric field are obtained. Numerical results on typical GaAs material reveal that the electro-optic effect nearly linearly increases with the increasing of magnitude of the electric field, but it monotonously decreases with the increasing of confining potential frequency of the semi-parabolic QW. The EOE in the model investigated is 10(2) times larger than that in the symmetric parabolic QW under the same electric field and the same frequency of parabolic confining potential, which is due to the self-asymmetry of the system and the electric field effect.

Abstract:It is predicted that grey spatial solitons can exist in biased photorefractive polymer. The functional relationships of the transverse velocity, spatial width and phase profile of these grey solitons with their normalized intensity and degree of ‘greyness’ are obtained. The polarization properties of these grey solitons are discussed. The intensity full width at half maximum of these grey solitons is found to be inversely proportional to the absolute value of the external bias field.
