Abstract:We consider practical aspects of reconstructing planar curves with prescribed Euclidean or affine curvatures. These curvatures are invariant under the special Euclidean group and the equi-affine groups, respectively, and play an important role in computer vision and shape analysis. We discuss and implement algorithms for such reconstruction, and give estimates on how close reconstructed curves are relative to the closeness of their curvatures in appropriate metrics. Several illustrative examples are provided.

Abstract:I will discuss results of three different types in geometry and topology. (1) General vanishing and rigidity theorems of elliptic genera proved by using modular forms, Kac-Moody algebras and vertex operator algebras. (2) The computations of intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of flat connections on a Riemann surface by using heat kernels. (3) The mirror principle about counting curves in Calabi-Yau and general projective manifolds by using hypergeometric series.

Abstract:Visual curve completion is a fundamental problem in understanding the principles of the human visual system. This problem is usually divided into two problems: a grouping problem and a shape problem. On one hand, though perception of the visually completed curve is clearly a global task (for example, a human perceives the Kanizsa triangle only when seeing all three black objects), conventional methods for solving the grouping problem are generally based on local Gestalt laws. On the other hand, the shape of the visually completed curve is usually recovered by minimizing shape energy in existing methods. However, not only do these methods lack mechanisms to adjust the shape of the recovered visual curve using perceptual, psychophysical, and neurophysiological knowledge, but it is also difficult to calculate an explicit representation of the visually completed curve. In this paper, we present a systematic computational model for generating a visually completed curve. Firstly, based on recent studies of perception, psychophysics, and neurophysiology, we formulate a grouping procedure based on the human visual system by seeking a minimum Hamiltonian cycle in a graph, solving the grouping problem in a global manner. Secondly, we employ a Bézier curve-based model to represent the visually completed curve. Not only is an explicit representation deduced, but we also present a means to integrate knowledge from related areas, such as perception, psychophysics, and neurophysiology, and so on. The proposed computational model has been validated using many modal and amodal completion examples, and desirable results were obtained.

Abstract:The field of multiple view geometry has seen tremendous progress in reconstruction and calibration due to methods for extracting reliable point features and key developments in projective geometry. Point features, however, are not available in certain applications and result in unstructured point cloud reconstructions. General image curves provide a complementary feature when keypoints are scarce, and result in 3D curve geometry, but face challenges not addressed by the usual projective geometry of points and algebraic curves. We address these challenges by laying the theoretical foundations of a framework based on the differential geometry of general curves, including stationary curves, occluding contours, and non-rigid curves, aiming at stereo correspondence, camera estimation (including calibration, pose, and multiview epipolar geometry), and 3D reconstruction given measured image curves. By gathering previous results into a cohesive theory, novel results were made possible, yielding three contributions. First, we derive the differential geometry of an image curve (tangent, curvature, curvature derivative) from that of the underlying space curve (tangent, curvature, curvature derivative, torsion). Second, we derive the differential geometry of a space curve from that of two corresponding image curves. Third, the differential motion of an image curve is derived from camera motion and the differential geometry and motion of the space curve. The availability of such a theory enables novel curve-based multiview reconstruction and camera estimation systems to augment existing point-based approaches. This theory has been used to reconstruct a “3D curve sketch”, to determine camera pose from local curve geometry, and tracking; other developments are underway.

Abstract:For decades, de Casteljau's algorithm has been used as a fundamental building block in curve and surface design and has found a wide range of applications in fields such as scientific computing, and discrete geometry to name but a few. With increasing interest in nonlinear data science, its constructive approach has been shown to provide a principled way to generalize parametric smooth curves to manifolds. These curves have found remarkable new applications in the analysis of parameter-dependent, geometric data. This article provides a survey of the recent theoretical developments in this exciting area as well as its applications in fields such as geometric morphometrics and longitudinal data analysis in medicine, archaeology, and meteorology.

Reconstructing Curves from Sparse Samples on Riemannian Manifolds

Abstract:Reconstructing 2D curves from sample points has long been a critical challenge in computer graphics, finding essential applications in vector graphics. The design and editing of curves on surfaces has only recently begun to receive attention, primarily relying on human assistance, and where not, limited by very strict sampling conditions. In this work, we formally improve on the state-of-the-art requirements and introduce an innovative algorithm capable of reconstructing closed curves directly on surfaces from a given sparse set of sample points. We extend and adapt a state-of-the-art planar curve reconstruction method to the realm of surfaces while dealing with the challenges arising from working on non-Euclidean domains. We demonstrate the robustness of our method by reconstructing multiple curves on various surface meshes. We explore novel potential applications of our approach, allowing for automated reconstruction of curves on Riemannian manifolds.

Abstract:Computational conformal geometry focuses on developing the computational methodologies on discrete surfaces to discover conformal geometric invariants. In this work, we briefly summarize the recent developments for methods and related applications in computational conformal geometry. There are two major approaches, holomorphic differentials and curvature flow. The holomorphic differential method is a linear method, which is more efficient and robust to triangulations with lower quality. The curvature flow method is nonlinear and requires higher quality triangulations, but more flexible. The conformal geometric methods have been broadly applied in many engineering fields, such as computer graphics, vision, geometric modeling and medical imaging. The algorithms are robust for surfaces scanned from real life, general for surfaces with different topologies. The efficiency and efficacy of the algorithms are demonstrated by the experimental results.

Abstract:Several numerical algorithms have been developed in the literature and employed for curves reconstruction. However, these techniques are developed within the discrete setting, namely the super-resolved image is defined on a finer grid than the observed images. Conversely, off-the-grid (or gridless) optimisation does not rely on a fine grid and offer a tractable theoretical and numerical framework. In this work, we present a gridless method accounting for the reconstruction of both open and closed curves, based on the latest theoretical development in off-the-grid curve reconstruction. This paper also shows -convergence results of the discretised surrogate functional towards the continuous energy we coined CROC.

Reconstruction of Curved Solids from Engineering Drawings

Abstract:This paper presents a new approach for reconstructing solids with planar, quadric and toroidal surfaces from three-view engineering drawings. By applying geometric theory to 3-D reconstruction, our method is able to remove restrictions placed on the axes of curved surfaces by existing methods. The main feature of our algorithm is that it combines the geometric properties of conics with affine properties to recover a wider range of 3-D edges. First, the algorithm determines the type of each 3-D candidate conic edge based on its projections in three orthographic views, and then generates that candidate edge using the conjugate diameter method. This step produces a wire-frame model that contains all candidate vertices and candidate edges. Next, a maximum turning angle method is developed to find all the candidate faces in the wire-frame model. Finally, a general and efficient searching technique is proposed for finding valid solids from the candidate faces; the technique greatly reduces the searching space and the backtracking incidents. Several examples are given to demonstrate the efficiency and capability of the proposed algorithm.
Curvy: A Parametric Cross-section based Surface Reconstruction

Abstract:In this work, we present a novel approach for reconstructing shape point clouds using planar sparse cross-sections with the help of generative modeling. We present unique challenges pertaining to the representation and reconstruction in this problem setting. Most methods in the classical literature lack the ability to generalize based on object class and employ complex mathematical machinery to reconstruct reliable surfaces. We present a simple learnable approach to generate a large number of points from a small number of input cross-sections over a large dataset. We use a compact parametric polyline representation using adaptive splitting to represent the cross-sections and perform learning using a Graph Neural Network to reconstruct the underlying shape in an adaptive manner reducing the dependence on the number of cross-sections provided.

Abstract:In the present paper, we apply Alexandrov geometry methods to study geometric analysis aspects of infinite semiplanar graphs with nonnegative combinatorial curvature in the sense of Higuchi. We obtain the metric classification of these graphs and construct the graphs embedded in the projective plane minus one point. Moreover, we show the volume doubling property and the Poincar\'e inequality on such graphs. The quadratic volume growth of these graphs implies the parabolicity. In addition, we prove the polynomial growth harmonic function theorem analogous to the case of Riemannian manifolds.
Computing shortest closed curves on non-orientable surfaces

Abstract:We initiate the study of computing shortest non-separating simple closed curves with some given topological properties on non-orientable surfaces. While, for orientable surfaces, any two non-separating simple closed curves are related by a self-homeomorphism of the surface, and computing shortest such curves has been vastly studied, for non-orientable ones the classification of non-separating simple closed curves up to ambient homeomorphism is subtler, depending on whether the curve is one-sided or two-sided, and whether it is orienting or not (whether it cuts the surface into an orientable one).

Abstract:Computing occluding contours is often a crucial step in stroke-based artistic 3-D stylization for movies, video games, and visualizations. However, many existing applications use only simple curve stylization techniques, such as thin black lines or hand-animated strokes. This is because sophisticated procedural stylization requires accurate curve topology, which has long been an unsolved research problem. This article describes a recent theoretical breakthrough in the topology problem. Specifically, the new theory points out that existing contour algorithms often generate curves that cannot have any valid visibility, and new algorithms show how to correct the problem. This article surveys classes of algorithms that can compute contours accurately and identifies new research opportunities.

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel method for solving the resection problem in two and three dimensions based on conformal geometric algebra (CGA). Advantage is taken because of the characteristics of CGA, which enables the representation of points, lines, planes, and volumes in a unified mathematical framework and offers a more intuitive and geometric understanding of the problem, in contrast to existing purely algebraic methods. Several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method and to compare its validity with established techniques in the field. Numerical simulations indicate that our vector geometric algebra implementation is faster than the best-known algorithms to date, suggesting that the proposed GA-based methods can provide a more efficient and comprehensible solution to the two- and three-dimensional resection problem, paving the way for further applications and advances in geodesy research. Furthermore, the method's emphasis on graphical and geometric representation makes it particularly suitable for educational purposes, allowing the reader to grasp the concepts and principles of resection more effectively. The proposed method has potential applications in a wide range of other fields, including surveying, robotics, computer vision, or navigation.

Abstract:Whilst Paul de Casteljau is now famous for his fundamental algorithm of curve and surface approximation, little is known about his other findings. This article offers an insight into his results in geometry, algebra and number theory. Related to geometry, his classical algorithm is reviewed as an index reduction of a polar form. This idea is used to show de Casteljau's algebraic way of smoothing, which long went unnoticed. We will also see an analytic polar form and its use in finding the intersection of two curves. The article summarises unpublished material on metric geometry. It includes theoretical advances, e.g., the 14-point strophoid or a way to link Apollonian circles with confocal conics, and also practical applications such as a recurrence for conjugate mirrors in geometric optics. A view on regular polygons leads to an approximation of their diagonals by golden matrices, a generalisation of the golden ratio. Relevant algebraic findings include matrix quaternions (and anti-quaternions) and their link with Lorentz' equations. De Casteljau generalised the Euclidean algorithm and developed an automated method for approximating the roots of a class of polynomial equations. His contributions to number theory not only include aspects on the sum of four squares as in quaternions, but also a view on a particular sum of three cubes. After a review of a complete quadrilateral in a heptagon and its angles, the paper concludes with a summary of de Casteljau's key achievements. The article contains a comprehensive bibliography of de Casteljau's works, including previously unpublished material.

On the Rich Landscape of Complete Intersection Monomial Curves

Abstract:The aim of this survey is to explore complete intersection monomial curves from a contemporary perspective. The main goal is to help readers understand the intricate connections within the field and its potential applications. The properties of any monomial curve singularity will be first reviewed, highlighting the interaction between combinatorial and algebraic properties. Next, we will revisit the two main characterizations of complete intersection monomial curves. One is based on deep algebraic properties given by Herzog and Kunz in 1971, while the other is based on a combinatorial approach given by Delorme in 1976. Our aim is to bridge the gap between these perspectives present in the current literature. Then, we will focus on recent advances that show an intriguing connection between numerical semigroups and Alexander polynomials of knots. Finally, we will revisit the deformation theory of these curves and provide an answer to a question posed by Buchweitz and Greuel regarding curve deformations.

On the geometry of some strata of uni-singular curves

Abstract:We study geometric properties of linear strata of uni-singular curves. The singularities of closures of the strata are resolved and the resolutions are represent as projective bundles. This enables to study their geometry. In particular we calculate the Picard groups of the strata and the intersection rings of the closures of the strata. The rational equivalence classes of some geometric cycles on the strata are calculated. As an auxiliary problem we discuss the collision of two singular points, restrictions on possible resulting singularity types and solve the collision problem in several cases. Then we present some cases of enumeration of curves with two singular points, one of them being a node.
